angling back on telly!

Ive just read that itv4 have a fishing series starting soon hosted by ali hamidi and dean macey. Looks very similar to the sky series they contributed to with so called 'celebrities' being coached on different venues.

I can already hear the cries of ' c'mon ' and the slaps from high fives after the landing of each fish!

Tomorrow at 8pm on itv4 seen it advertised in AM last week, sky plussed it worth a nosey but not expecting much, probably trying to get more korda clones

Trailer for this looks cringeworthy and as far removed from my angling ideals as you could get. I will still have a look though !

Trying to reach a wider audience than the likes of you and I is a tough ask when it comes to making a fishing programme or series. Can you imagine the brief? Make it entertaining, try and not focus on the disgusting maggots or worms, cut out the boring sitting and waiting for a bite, fill in with a few hollers and high fives, and cut all the technical bits.

Passion for Angling had the right mixture, Boyhood Dreams was the common thread that touched millions, with the superb filming and fanatical attention to detail, it appealed to both Angler and non-Angler alike.

The days of commissioning similar are long gone I think, certainly since the BBC have an never ending blood lust with the long out of date Attenborough where jeopardy is the theme in Wildlife programmes.

We find angling a lifetime filled with expectation, excitement and disappointment that would make a wonderful never ending series that would live longer than Corry, but thankfully it still remains our little secret.

Neil, thank you,:) its been a while since i watched "A Passion", just digging the dvds out of the drawer. Thats me sorted for the next few hours, happy days. :):):)

' Long out of date Attenborough'! How very dare you! The man is irreplaceable!

I didn't watch it, the trailer was enough to put me off.

I'd like to see Attenborough do a programme on freshwater fish in england, not sure if this has already been done?
I've seen him show us pretty much every other living thing on the planet but never a chub!

Admittedly I am not very well versed in the bewildering world of the celebrity , however I didn't recognise either of the guest anglers , something to do with boxing ? The programme was lame , I kept watching hoping it would improve but no ... I think it was Mr Macey who, when commenting on the mucky commercial stew pond they were fishing said ';' this is where we all started fishing '' and imagined a chorus of voices from anglers of a certain age '' Oh no it wasn't !'' I'm afraid it made Robson , high art in comparison , and that really is saying something

Fat chance, look at Countryfile or similar, they do programmes on the Wye etc, never a mention of fish species that inhabit the river, apart from the Salmon (visitor), they prefer to look at the kyaks or the peat bogs and caves etc, I don't really know why this is the case, as our British fish are diverse and are very important to any water course as anything else.

Watched an episode of Griff Reece Jones do the Severn and Wye from source to sea yesterday, not a mention of fish, apart from the Salmon fishers in the Severn Estuary (dying breeds, full of romantic notions etc).

Suppose this is all part and parcel why the Otter is thriving so well, now they do have star quality.: rolleyes:

I think we all get the commercial need to create a programme that has the broadest possible appeal. The thing I don't get is that fishing is meant to be the most popular of all hobbies isnt it? It's not exactly niche. I just found the programme a bit dull to be honest, despite the efforts of the presenters. I'm a huge fan of Dean Macey but I couldn't help feeling that he found the whole thing a bit embarrassing. They might need to follow the Top Gear formula. Reviewing and driving fast cars is OK up to a point, but Top Gear has survived well because of the ridiculous antics the three of them get up to and these are often only vaguely associated with cars. You also need strong presenters and if you are not majoring on the activity itself, the banter needs to be extremely funny. Passion For Angling was actually very amusing in places- OK, perhaps only to anglers.

Slightly surprised the Porn industry hasn't adopted a similar approach to the show last night. "The Great Fuc* Off". A sort of light hearted pornographic game show in which contestants and porn stars engage in various activities in a bid to win a prize. And in total contrast to normal shows of this kind, the booby prize would be universally coveted.

Catching the Impossible was a very well made series, when that managed to make it onto Channel 4 it was on a Sunday morning at about 5am, what a waste.

Give me fishing programmes like that over the Essex Boys Pukka Brigade any day.

Id rather watch Susan Boyle playing Naked Twister with Jim Shelley.

Macey is bearable but his constant laughing and hollering is extremely annoying. And Mr. Hamidi i just........................

Neil.
Actually I was invited to take part in Countryfile some time ago to talk about fishing and fish on the River Loddon.
It was arranged to take place at my suggestion at Dinton Pastures.

On the day it poured non stop so rearranged for the next day.

I had a call in the morning from the presenter John Craven apologising that his father had suffered a heart attack so it was cancelled.

Nearly Neil. And apparently nothing since.

I was so close to Fame.

Hugh Miles tried to sell this to the Beeb but was turned down, so although it was very very good it was consigned to Channel 4. There does seem to be an attitude within the BBC to play along with the Anti-hunting lobby.
