Hiya All,

Can anyone advise me on a comfortable but fairly lightweight pair of boots suitable for the roving approach of fishing.

My old ones have now developed leaks :)

Many thanks in andvance of your replies.

Cheers - Michael.... :)

You wont go far wrong with British forces combat boots very cheap and loads on ebay. For Total waterproof, there is a goretex version, which is a very good winter boot aswell.

Although you get what you pay for check out the Go Outdoors site:

http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/walking/footwear/walking-boots

They regularly have special offers and if you are not near a store also do mail order. Note to get the special low price or be eligible for special offers you need to 'join' their scheme which from memory is £4.00 per year but if you look at the range they stock it could be well worth it.

Re - Boots

Thanks for all your replies guys, will probably call at a store that you have suggested as I would like to try them on. Maybe I could buy them out of my birthday lottery win of a tenner - I think not - thanks everyone :D

if you buy walking boots, go for the good ones above £100, most are gortex lined.

Pretty good, but when the latest pair failed I attacked them with a Granger's GoreTex boot-treatment product, which shut them up.

my pair of meindl's went to the bin last winter after 13 years, looking for a new pair.

I would agree with the recomendations to go to a good outdoors shop, do not buy something off the net which you have not tried.

I generally go to cotswold outdoors, they will fully measure your feet both loaded (i.e. standing) and unloaded, you will be suprised the difference, my feet are a size bigger when I am standing than seated and two sizes wider.........

They will really do a fully comprehensive fitting service and if you are not hapy after a couple of weeks you can take them back and they will do more, add insoles, heel lifts, etc until they are perfect.

I had a pair of Meindl boots which lasted me 12 years, fishing and hill walking and last year got a pair of the Scarpa GTX which are goretex lined and very, very comfortable.

What I did find when I bought the Scarpa's is that different makes or styles of boots suit different foot shapes so you really need to see what is good for you, any recomendation might not suit your foot shape.......I really wanted another pair of Meindl as I considered them the best but there were non in the current range which were comfortable with my wide feet......

Footwear is the most important pice of "tackle" you will buy, especially if you walk a lot and want to stay dry and warm..............buy wisely

An alternative approach: I bought a couple of pairs of Karrimor boots from Sports World on Monks Cross, York. Something like £15 per pair. Comfy, warm, waterproof. If they last more than a season - bonus! They've actually lasted 3 years so far.

Danner boots are good, cost good money but also have a 2 year guarantee.
I moved onto Meindl and Ian is right in what he says.....spend what to can..it is worth it in the end.

once again I must draw your attention to what all well dressed anglers should be kitted out with.

Definitely. A pair of the above plus some Harris Tweed and split-cane Y-fronts, and a Gentleman is ready for anything!

As ever,
