Advice for first visit to the River Wye or River Severn

David Purdy

New Member
Hello all, I am new to the forum and would be grateful for some advice. I am keen to pay my first visit to the River Wye or River Severn in the New Year with my Son. I am looking for some recommendations with regards to locations for beginner barbel anglers that are (relatively) consistent in terms of catching and how to obtain day tickets. Also any recommendations for cheap B&B / guest house / camping accommodation in those areas would be very much appreciated. We will be travelling up from Bath area so the closer the better but willing to travel for the best probability of helping my boy (and me) experience our first barbel. Any info greatly appreciated :)

Could get yourselves a baa membership. They run from January to December so you’ll get a full year out of it. They have got lots of middle Severn and one stretch of the wye. Plenty of b&bs/campsites around the middle Severn as well. Not guaranteed you’ll catch anything though the way this season has been

Go on the Wye.

Advice to join BAA good. Fish their Wye bit for starters.

Check river level. Today the water is 1/4mile from the river.😣

Good advice - much appreciated Jon :)

David, no matter where you fish on the Wye or Severn my advice would be keep mobile, even in winter when things are slower I will move every 30 mins if not catching, in the summer I'll move after 15 mins. Once you know the river you will adjust this according to the conditions and the swims you get to know but trust me it works and is the best way to explore the river. Simple feeder tactics with halibut pellets with meat as change bait is all you need. Good luck.
