A little bit of History… Alfred Jardine on Barbel .

There are some real gems in Jardine's prose... :)

'Recently I had a letter from a friend in America who is fond of fishing, telling me how, in the autumn of last year, he went “legermg” in one of the rivers of New York State. Among other queer fish, he hooked and, after some trouble, landed a 241b. Troiynx ferox —which means in plain fisherman’s parlance a “ snapping turtle.” As his bull-dog was dead, he took it home, and chained it by one of its legs in the front garden, to snap and bark, and keep vagrants away; having accomplished this, the turtle was killed, and made into soup, to feed and fatten my friend’s children. [To be continued.)'
