45 " brolly

Hi, apart from the Fox one any recommends for a 45 " brolly ? Ive got a 50" one for winter just need a small one for summer

I think you have very few options, either cheap and cheerful (think NGT, Bison etc) for £25/£30. These are light but relatively flimsy - although I've had an NGT one for the last two years and it's not been well looked after, it's never leaked, it's light as a feather and it has been used in gusty (40mph) winds, but it is about dead now.

A bit of a curve ball for you and what I have recently bought, Advanta X5 Flatback. £50 from Angling Direct, as description says it has a flat back. Pole can be used in a rear or centre position (note - the ground spike it comes with is made of cheese, but apart from that seems really well made). Has 4 pegging points at the rear and it is a 45 inch brolly, but coverage is excellent. Oh, it weighs 2.6kg with carry sleeve, basic pegs & guy ropes.

I have had a play with mine and found it to be most sturdy (and it feels very sturdy!) when the pole is left in the centre position, is angled 45 degrees into the ground with the back pegged down. Couple of pics for you:

Bet the Korum graphite brolley is not far off 45”. It’s definitely a small 50”
1 man and a bag is about the lot for it.

I bought it because it’s small and very light to carry about.
I drilled out my storm pole adapters to go over the carbon spokes and she’s rock solid. my 50” ovel is massive in comparison and doesn’t get a look in any more.

Hi Gary, what storm pole adapters did you use? I've looked into getting some but the spokes are quite chunky, 6mm'ish. I did think of doing what @Richard Isaacs said and drilling some out to fit, but all the ones I've looked at don't look like they have enough meat on them to facilitate doing that

And they are a 4** series stainless steel. You’ll want good sharp drill bits, slow rpm, plenty of pressure and cutting oil.
if you let it go blunt and generate heat rather than cut you will be up the creek cos that sh*t work hardens.

Rob, these are NGT storm pole fittings. The spoke hole is 5mm and there is enough thickness to drill out to 6mm.

That’s not gonna be a lot of fun taking just 1/2 a milly off the wall. I think mine were 4mm and I drilled them out to 7mm as my brolley spokes are 7mm.

I need a new brolly but just want a spike in the ground one. Most pegs I fish you can’t get a bivvy style one in that needs pegging down. The brolly I use was my dads from late 80’s early 90’s and is heavy as hell cause of the size of it plus the thick material but at the same time it can handle getting caught on brambles and stuff without ripping like I’d imagine most modern ones would

i use a korum supalite brolly only 2kg ok for summer wouldnt use in to strong a wind but does the job

Chris. Never having been a brolly man (I'd always break the things within 5 minutes) I took the plunge last winter. Following quite a few recommendations on here I purchased a Korum pentalite day shelter. Quick to erect, robust, well designed and keeps the wind and rain off. I've gone soft .

Your a TT man though Ady. You could erect the star ship enterprise in the swims on that river and it makes sense to go for a shelter.
i must have a brolley. It’s sometimes tight getting one of those in but we manage. You’d never peg a shelter out on some if not most of the swims I fish. I’d imagine Chris is probably in a similar boat.

Rich, with your skills I’d say a decent golf brolly would be perfect, just cut off the handle and engineer a spike attachment. I use one that size all the time, much lighter and mobile than standard fishing brollies.

I ended up getting the korum graphite and youre dead right about it being a small 50" ! Perfect size for my needs and looks decent enough to last a few seasons ( i hope !!!).

Bit of a late suggestion for Korum brolly users but they might work - bit the bullet and bought a Fox Specialist 45- lovely bit of kit but its missing the 2x key storm caps where you really need them as per Richards pics . . .spoke to Fox and at vast expense (£25 for a pair) got these, albeit direct from Fox not AD . . .

Jesus I couldn’t bring myself to pay that. I’d sooner get a cheap stainless set for about 7 quid and drill them out if needed

Lol - thought you'd say that Rich and you'd be right as I was royally (Fox pun) stung! However they do the job and for those luddites without your tools/tech expertise they might just be the ticket!
