10ft rods…..

Tim Marks

Senior Member & Supporter
I’m after suggestions please for a (pair of) 10ft rods with a test curve of around 2.25 -2.5 lb……

I’m currently tench fishing a big pit with a couple of very tight swims and longer rods are a liability. Currently I’m experimenting with a 2.75 10ft Ballista and a borrowed 3lb Tacklebox CFX. Both are nice enough rods, but a bit over the top for my needs.

Currently on my radar are:

TFG Compact 2.5lb - seemingly only available used.
Wychwood Fltr 2.25 - available new and cheap.
Various Free Spirit up market variants eg Hi-S - available at serious cost.

If I go up to 2.75 lb the options start to widen and there are loads at 3lb. But I don’t need really beefy ‘carp rods’.

Ideal spec (!) would include a cork handle and small rings (another reason for avoiding ‘carp’ rods). New or used……but I’m not very keen on ‘retractable’ rods.

I’ve had a 10ft marker/spod rod for about 18 months and love the portability - so IF I find something I like it will probably get used for some barbel fishing situations too.

Any suggestions/pointers gratefully received.

Why not give Dave Lumb a ring? He supplies a 10 foot 2.75 lb tc and will build to your requirements. Not cheap though.

Nash scope rods are great. I have a 10footer in 2.25lb and its ideal for that and numerous other purposes.

I have a pair of fox explorer TI 8ft to 10ft rods in 3lb test, lovely rods but i've still not used them.

Mark Tunley can do you a 10ft 2.25tc rod. He's currently building me a second one. It's a great rod with loads of back bone. It's not listed on his website, but if you drop him a line he'll talk you through it. Not cheap though given it's a custom build, but you can have your cork and small rings.

You pays your money and takes your choice. The wychwood fltr are cork handle, smallish rings, reliable blank ( my better Half's used hers for general carp fishing for 3 or 4 years now and had dozens of fish to high 20s) and inexpensive. Good for lines up to 12lb or so and down to 8lb (or maybe 6lb if you play fish with soft hands). Nice progressive action.
But not a custom made jobbie.

Thanks, that's super helpful. AD here I come.
I think you would struggle casting a 6 oz lead on any of those rods tim
'Cast' is another word for lob !

I'm careful with my 1.75 rods; but with my C3's, Chimera 2.5's and Torrix 2.25's I can fish big leads at close-ish range. I tend to go home when I need 6oz on the Thames.

My mate has a horrible habit if using even bigger leads (up to 8oz) on lighter rods.....

Tim , when you get the wychwood fltr let us know your thoughts on it as im interested. Cheers
Hi all,
I've also been thinking of the Wychwood fltr, as a barbel stalker rod, used with a centerpin.
As an old f##t, I don't like the modern trend of unlined Rod rings and looking at the rod details on line, it doesn't specify if lined or not.
For less than £60, I think it would be perfect if it has lined rings?
Regards Wayne

I have the Korum XTND rods in 10ft 2.25tc and I've tried replacing them twice (for my small river barbel angling). I have to say I really enjoy using them and will give up trying to replace them. I know you specified not telescopic but for me these would be ideal. (if you can find any)
