They are definitely in the Thames around Oxford, due to flooding from Linear's St. John's into the Windrush on more than one occasion. St. John's has done a Wels close to 100lbs so goodness knows how big they could be!
6000 and 8000 shimano's have the same size body just the spool is different. 10000 is slightly different in body size. I use all three on the Thames but much prefer a single handle as you can crank a big lead and a lot of weed much easier than with twn a twin handle. Also a metal spool will take...
I have only ever caught one still water barbel, while tench fishing. It was just over 7lbs and I thought it was a double fig tench. The lake used to get flooded by the Windrush most years. Needless to say that I where I returned it.
I bought a pair of 13ft 2.5lb and I must they are pretty good. Handle a bit thin and not as nice to play fish on as a Harrison flood rod but for the money they are excellent.
Lots of raw sewage going into the rivers especially after heavy rain and people are advised not to swim for 48hrs after heavy rain because if as little as 50ml are swallowed you could become seriously ill
No we are testing for bacteria chemicals and e coli. The results so far have shown levels 4x to 6x higher than expected. So all the rivers tested are not in a very healthy state.
The signal crays were so bad a few years ago it was almost impossible to fish. There are not so many now, could be coincidence that the water quality is not as good now.
I am taking part in a water quality survey from 18 sites around Oxford which started in April 2021 and will finish in Dec 2021. Rivers included in the survey are Thames, Windrush, Evenlode, Cherwell, Ray and other small streams that flow into these. This survey is the biggest so far in the UK...
I don't fish the Trent but fish the mid to lower Thames. Most of the time I use 2 lb Harrison multi carp rods and these are great for 90% of the time, however when the river is pushing as now, I use 3lb Harrison pike rods. Why because they are designed for casting heavy baits and are of a more...
Cracking fish. The Thames can be a real ball breaker at times, blank after blank with no knocks or indications on the rod, then your rod tip lurches towards the river totally out of the blue. This is why I love this river, very hard but it holds some very, very big barbel. As I said in an...
I walk my dog along the Thames at Port Meadow most days along with hundreds of others dog owners. It is very close to the centre of Oxford and has a number of rowing clubs that use it as well during the day. I have never seen an otter there during daylight but they are nocturnal and use the...
