    Ebro catfishing

Al doesn't do a lot of purely catting now as the bird-spotting tours have become very popular. You need to book early as he doesn't do many weeks. I've got five days late March next year.

    Ebro catfishing

I had five days on the lower Ebro around Amposta last week, catfishing was the main priority but lots of bird-spotting opportunities too. Angling wise it was my best trip thus far with 20 cats landed, four over 100lb with the best going 147lb. Conditions were favourable with a bit of extra water...

    Yorkshire Derwent

Hi Michael, as others have said the Derwent is designated an SSSI, from memory it's to 5m back from the river which isn't really relevant this winter. As well as incurring the wrath of the landowner and controlling club you'll also find yourself in hot water with Natural England who take a very...

Reduced to £150. Harrison Chimera 3 specialist 12/2.25 Now reduced to £130

Lovely rods, I've got two as barbel rods and two with fewer eyes for big pit tench rods. Bags of power.

Anyone had any scary/paranormal experiences on the bank?

I've had a few unexplained experiences over the years, one of the strangest was when I went to my visit my deceased grandmother in the undertaker's 'chapel of rest'. I'm a logical and methodical sort of bloke and was well prepared for the experience but it went completely differently to what I...

Fishing the swim next to someone

I'm fortunate to be still fit enough to walk a long way with my gear strapped to my shoulders. Certainly since covid struck I've found a lot more antisocial anglers on the bank, this has driven me to seek out unpopular and remote spots where I'm unlikely to see a soul all day. It has had the...

    Blanking

Keep at it, you never know what's next. I've been thinking outside of the box a bit this close season and have been going after different species and have had four PBs last few weeks. I was fishing for eels yesterday, very much a steep learning curve but hit two of the four runs and a new PB...

    Ebro catfishing

Back on the Ebro last week for a few days fishing from a boat between Tortosa and Deltebre on the lower river. Water very low and pretty clear after a prolonged dry period in Catalunya. Cats were finicky but landed 11 at an average weight of 66lb, best two going 161lb and 128lb. Still looking...

    Xmas pressy

January sales in the transfer window and a new striker at Goodison will be top of the list I think Derek! (I thankfully opted for Prenton Park Boxing Day)

    What is fishing?

So many facets to angling so it's impossible to label it with one word. When I'm deep sea tuna fishing I'm constantly scouring the horizon looking for the tell-tale splashes of feeding fish, that's hunting to me. When I'm stalking freshwater fish in shallow and clear water that's also hunting...

    Fox Specialist Brolly Bargain

Fits in my Gardner roving quiver just fine, I can get a landing net handle in the same central compartment with it too.

12 ft harrison chimera no 3 Question

I've got the Shimano Ci4+ Medium Baitrunners on mine, gutsy reels for gutsy rods. Balance seems fine. I use the lighter 5000 size Shimanos on my 12' 2lb & 1.75lb Torrix rods, they didn't feel right on my C3 rods.

NEW ! The grand fishing adventure

I watched the latest episode, not too bad and not to be taken too seriously I guess. I've seen worse with that Geordie fella. One thing that did concern me though is that there didn't seem to be a lead on the rig when they were playing carp on a number of occasions. Thought that a bit naughty if...

I see the price of grub has gone up

£2 a pint at my local (Wirral) tackle shop and they'll often give you them for free when they're getting old. Sort of tackle shop that you can feel loyal to when it comes to bigger purchases.

    Meat fishing a nearside slack

I've been a big advocate of the big lump of spam down the edge with minimal or no loosefeed for a few years. It's having the balls and the confidence to do it, but remember that you're fishing for the big girls, not the more prolific smaller fish, quality over quantity. On most rivers I'm...

How did your Barbel journey start ?

I'd always been a 'fish for anything that swims' sort of angler and the only fish that I occasionally specifically targeted were pre-commercial carp, winter pike and gravel pit tench. An older work colleague was obsessed with the Swale in the Topcliffe and Fawdington areas and invited me along...

Peregrine Heavy Water Rod 12' 2.25lb

Thanks for the feedback gents, having discussed my requirements with the very helpful people at Peregrine I've decided to go with a pair of C3. They also offered a 2.25lb Torrix. I already had one C3 built by Chas Burns that had rarely been on the bank, dropped it off at his house and he's going...
