Rod for big chub and barbel.

Have a look at the sonik xtractor+ specialist rods, all 10ft retractable. The twin tips are great, they do a 1.5lb and 2lb tc. I've got both but only used the 2lbtc so far. They are really light and nice to fish with. Reasonable prices too.

    Korum hooks to nylon issues.

The thing is, korum do a few decent items, but hooklengths, which I consider one of the most critical parts of tackle seem to be terrible. Whilst I'm definitely going to tie all my own from now on, for folks who don't have the dexterity to tie their own, and rely on manufacturers getting...

    Korum hooks to nylon issues.

I'm probably not the first to have issues with these, 12" of 6lb line to a size 12 hook, snapped 3 (yes 3) in succession with some trout that weren't especially massive (was after barbel/chub on the Irwell). I initially though I may have clipped a sharp object on the first one, and perhaps the...

How did everyone’s day one go ?

Nothing for me on the 16th on the Irwell, but there's more chance of hooking a unicorn on there than hooking a barbel, but somewhere in that river there are some. Went out early this morning on the Irwell behind my house and nabbed a nice grayling which kicks off my season.

    Freespirit Tamer Power Float 15'

To be honest, I bought a new tip section for the acolyte for about £60. Angling direct were brilliant, considering I didn't get the rod from them. They are amazing rods, it's just that the lightness means delicate, and they are. I got the guru, yes its a bit heavier, it's basic, it's probably...

    Freespirit Tamer Power Float 15'

The guru ngauge pro 14ft is a decent rod, rated to 10lb line. I use 8lb korum glide line on it, handled a 5lb brown trout no issues. It's not particularly heavy either for a strong float rod. Nearly half the price of an acolyte specimen and won't be as delicate. I broke an acolyte plus 14ft...

Guru N-Gauge pro 14ft and the big irwell trout.

Managed to christen the above rod the other day with a 3lb+ brown trout and again today with one verging on 5lb, both from the irwell, and both on trotted prawns. Using 8lb korum glide mono and a 6lb flouro Hooklength, along with a size 8 hook and a korum speci stick in 8g flavour. Also bagged a...

Yeah I'm friends with Mike, salford friendly anglers chairman. He's still after an irwell barbel after many years of trying. I must be a sucker for punishment as I love the challenge, knowing there are so few of them in there.

Yeah, it's a stones throw from mine, just over the canal (upper part of Bolton,Bury canal) quicker to walk than to drive. I'll post any progress on here.

Yeah, I've done youtube to death 🤣. Location is the most crucial thing, as is with all fishing, but as there are so few barbel in the irwell it becomes even more critical. I think I got snapped off a barbel once on the irwell, was on 4lb line and it tore off like a missile and we parted ways, it...

Darent Valley 13ft 2 piece specialist float rod.

I have one of them Darent valley rods, I was surprised at how heavy it was. Only used once and had a few trout to about 2lb which it was fine for, but my arm was aching a bit after an hour trotting in the middle of the river. On the other hand, The 8ft quiver is absolutely brilliant for the price.

Hi all, I've always loved fishing and was brought up on the Bridgewater canal round Eccles and Trafford park. After moving house 3 years ago to a small town in Radcliffe, I have the river Irwell behind my house (Croal/Irwell confluence) which I have fished on a number of occasions but catching...
