    Normark float rod buyers guide

Might well know of him then Simon. I lived in the area until i was in my late 20's and got in to match fishing in my teens. EAC was the go to tackle shop in the area. Geoff used to fish lots of our matches on the Tiverton Canal and used to have the odd pleasure session with a few friends after...

    Season end

This was my first full season where targeting barbel was the focus, having joined a club in mid 2023 with rights on the Ribble. Before that my barbel fishing had been spending up to 2 weeks on holiday around the Middle Severn, plus the odd day trip as I didn't have much barbel fishing locally...

    FUTURE FISHING big update

Very sad. Never visited the shop but bought a couple Fox barbel x4s from them last year and the service was brilliant - competitive price, free delivery and extremely quick despatch.

    Prescription Polarised Sunglasses

Just be mindful of potential future changes in your prescription too if you're considering expensive models. I got a pair of designer prescription sunglasses several years ago, not overly expensive, but encouraged me to keep wearing them even when my prescription changed slightly about 2-3...

    Chasing chub....

Cheers Ian, lost a barbel late on that day, having caught plenty of silverfish on my maggot feeder rod. Hoping to get out later this week, either there again or on one of the other stretches we talked about :p.

    Chasing chub....

Nice clip Ian! Think we met on the river a week or so ago and had a chat. I recognise the rod/reel combo and the greys jacket. I was the guy fishing upstream from you, who found that huge pike lure 😬.

    Budget Alarms

Nash Siren S5 are about £17 and have never let me down, not that I use alarms very often!

    Tench in Leicestershire

Just over the border in North Northamptonshire is Sywell Reservoir - reported to be one of the best tench waters in the UK, and it's fishable on a day ticket. I haven't fished it, but used to live in South Leicestershire and this is just a short drive, so definitely worth considering. Think...

    Bank Tackle discount

Good hooks and a reliable company from whom I have bought several bits of terminal tackle. Offer free UK postage too as well as keen prices. Only downside is that their hooks are a bit on the large size and most only go down to a size 10, which is more like other manufacturer's size 8's (there...

    Bank tackle hook sizes

I ordrered a few sizes of the BT wide gapes, and do like them. Good prices, service and free postage at the time. Agree they are probably a size bigger than most competitors hooks. I find the size 10's ideal for bigger baits like boilies and large pellets or dumbbells.

    Heated socks

Can't see the need myself. Can honestly say I have never suffered from cold feet since buying my first pair of Skeetex Essex boots. Now on my second pair. They are brilliant, just not so great for walking long distances.

    Trotting using stickfloats and braid.

Oh right, all the braids I have owned have sunk. I used them for years match fishing with a feeder for bream etc. No point using a floating braid for feeder fishing 😛

    Trotting using stickfloats and braid.

Can't see the benefit either.....don't most braids sink? A floating mono, possibly treated with a floating spray or musclin, gives far better presentation in my humble opinion.

J W Young Reels, History, Assembly and Use

Never used a pin but am tempted to buy one, although can't justify the cost of a JW Young for maybe half a dozen sessions a year. Might have to have a look at some of the budget options, accepting they won't be made to the same standards as these reels. Am also a bit wary of used reels, knowing...

Question for the braid users out there

If one of the benefits of braid is that a smaller diameter means less water resistance/easier to hold bottom, then doesn't adding a shock/abraision leader negate a lot of that benefit? I can see it might work in deeper water, where the leader is near the bottom where water flow is slower, but...

Are you happy to pay to watch fishing videos?

Not many better videos on YouTube than those featuring Terry. A born storyteller who just conveys all his passion so easily.

your reasoning for your leader length and material?

Think the question refers to the length of line from lead/feeder to hook. That could actually be longer than the hook length itself as there are options to use a shorter hook length, but adjust/extend the distance from lead to hook (e.g. Enterprise adjuster beads, or even just a short hook...

    using old reels

Seeing all those Cardinals makes me think of many days as a young teenager gazing lovingly at all the pictures in the annual Abu Tight Lines catalogues. Wish I had kept them!!
