I go back further than that , caught carp on cat food , par boiled potatoes etc
Barbel baits back then was sausage meat mixed with breadcrumbs or rusk
Started with Hutchys base mix , mingle fruit , black magic etc which were a pig to roll
Baits that stand out for me are Geoff Kemps ...
I used SOLAR S&O back in the nineties and I see it’s making some sort of comeback despite it being unavailable in it’s original form any more
It caught fish but it wasn’t a game changer like these companies are making out
Just another marketing gimmick bait companies are using bringing old...
Been trying the BT specialist gripper size 6 and had 3 come back with a turned over point using solid bags carp fishing
Silty lake bottom , they do seem to blunt easy
Already lost a fish and barely landed an 18
Anyone tried them ?
Bargain here for someone

And to think Fred Wilton who came up with the original idea of replacing the fish’s natural food items with a HNV boilie did it way back in the early seventies, way ahead of his time
To start from scratch with your own base mix your just making life hard for yourself , if you want individuality just pick two or three flavours and blend them , maybe add some salmon oil or yeast extract , consult with John first though .
Regarding prebaiting , I don’t think it’s necessary ...
A kilo of base mix makes more than a kilo of ready mades , and it’ll last ages , think I went through 3 kilo last season with some left
You only need one flavour and eggs on top of that , 50 mil of flavour £15 and you’ll never use it all
Mr Issac’s got me going on JBs bait and I never looked...
I make my own with JBs stuff , find it more rewarding and adds another dimension to my fishing , personally think off the shelf stuff is much of a muchness and made to a price point .
I’ve had some great results with my own bait but very rarely with off the shelf stuff , so that’s good enough...
I see Hinders are now charging £50 for 10 kilos of hemp now 😳
Think my first order with them it was £35 only two years ago .
