All sorted as per previous post but thanks.

    Hook pulls

Just to update this thread. While not in any way scientific, changed knot and hook. 5 for 5. No hook pulls. Reassuring.

    Hook pulls

Exactly describes what I do, pull on pick up to ensure there's a firm hook hold but seems not recently!

    Hook pulls

Cheers Mike and Paul. I fish the canals during the river close season and that's fine stuff on the tip as I love that type of fishing. You do miss the odd one as the roach and bream are so used to being caught during matches. However the run of hook pulls so far this river season is one I'm not...

    Hook pulls

Hi Jon, Same rods. I always use barbless.

    Hook pulls

No hook pulls on the size 4. Only used that size once for a huge lump of meat. Usually use any size between 14 and 8 depending on bait size. Biggest test curve I use with the conditions at the moment are 1.75tc. I don't use braid for barbel.

    Hook pulls

The comparative strength and ease to tie on smaller hooks without using a hook tyer.

    Hook pulls

Thanks Graham, when using meat I don't hair rig but never had an issue before with obtaining a decent hook hold. I'm narrowing it down to a bad batch of hooks and/or how the hooks are angled with a palomar knot.

    Hook pulls

Always fishing the Wharfe last few seasons. It is full of weed this year, more so than I remember from previous summers.

    Hook pulls

Thanks Richard for the comprehensive reply. So many things to consider. I've recently moved to the palomar knot and wondering if I need to go back to my hooks and see how the different hook patterns are sitting. Always previously used the knotless/snell method. I changed as prefer the line...

    Hook pulls

Thanks, I've been following. I've now got some cryogens in the large size patterns for meat. Already used the bank tackle ones but starting to favour these over the hit and miss Korums which had been okay until the last lot I used.

    Hook pulls

Had 3 hook pulls on one session out of 5, so only landed 2. Poor ratio. Same hooks as last two seasons so just wonder if it's a bad batch. Think there's a lot of weed around at the moment, more so than I remember in previous summers.

    Hook pulls

Cheers, I've gone up to a size 4 for meat. Not sure how it'll pan out as big meat isn't great during the day in summer so far for obvious reasons.

    Hook pulls

Always looking to improve though, so any suggestions welcome. Not sure why I'm getting so many this season so far.

    Hook pulls

I've had more hook pulls this season than the total of the last two seasons put together. Some within seconds of a run, others at the net. I've swapped to another brand of hook after noticing some were not as sharp as others in a pack or dulling very quickly. Any ideas what I can do to...

Advice on hooklength breaking strain for ledgering and float

Exactly why a hooklength should be used?

Advice on hooklength breaking strain for ledgering and float

OK, just seems a weaker hooklength adds an extra margin of safety. Would it not be safer to use 8lb hooklength and a stronger main line instead of the straight through approach? If not, what are the advantages of a straight through approach please?

Advice on hooklength breaking strain for ledgering and float

Thanks Richard, interesting about not using a weaker hooklength. I've never considered it a safe rig if I couldn't predict with a degree of certainty where the line would break.

Advice on hooklength breaking strain for ledgering and float

4 miles fished, not one indication from any of the deeper swims.
