The best thing you’ve seen whilst fishing

Great post and fantastic photos. Having fished my whole life (now in my early 70's) I've seen loads of fantastic sights when fishing. However, I still get goosebumps when I see bittern. Living near to and fishing the Norfolk Broads, I've been fortunate enough to see these rare, secretive birds...

What is it with match anglers and fish care … 😡

Our local Club has now introduced a rule at our lake that if a carp is caught estimated at 5lb+ during a match it is weighed, independently verified and returned immediately. The same rule applies to pleasure anglers and in fairness, any large fish are immediately returned to the water anyway...

    "Biggest ever environmental law suit"

Definitely not talking rubbish. The problem with many environmental problems is PROVING who is to blame. 20 years ago I saw clean gravel beds in the Wye, now all I see is thick sludge covering the river bed. 20 years ago I saw lovely streamer weed now all I see is that horrible sticky weed. The...

    "Biggest ever environmental law suit"

I'm not aware of what angling organisations are joining this action? I agree with you regarding catch rates. I have a log of fish caught on my annual "pilgrimage" to the Wye covering the last 20 years. Grim reading sadly. Big reduction in numbers of fish caught.

    "Biggest ever environmental law suit"

I have just read about the "biggest ever environmental law suit" being held in the High Court against 3 x organisations accused of polluting the Rivers Wye, Lugg and Usk. It seems 4,000 people joined this action being led by law firm Leigh Day. It will be interesting to see how this progresses...

    Accomodation in Hereford

I've used Brandon Lodge B&B in Hereford before. They have a few bedrooms that are outside the main building, so great for putting your gear in. Lovely full English breakfasts as well!!

    Stuck in a rut?

Hi Christian. Thanks for your response. You sound a bit like me in that, when I'm watching my rod tip and an unusual bird flies past, I grab my binoculars to get a closer look, forgetting I'm meant to be fishing. Like most guys, I can't multi task so if I get a bite, I miss it! 😂. But, I may...

    Stuck in a rut?

Thanks Andrew. Very helpful. Now to do some research! 👍

    Stuck in a rut?

Thanks Andrew. Please forgive my ignorance, but when you say "middle Severn" what large towns are nearby? Just so I can get my bearings! Thanks

    Stuck in a rut?

Due to geography my barbel fishing is limited. I have always done quite well on the R. Wye so have, for the past 20 years or so, taken the 5 hour drive to get there. I usually stay for a week. However, I feel I need a change of scenery. Distance is not an issue, so can anyone suggest a...

Am I wasting my time buying a second rod?

I'm down to one rod now due to the fact that my 2nd rod got pulled into the river at Backney many years ago! I kid you not. My fault, forgot to engage bait runner. Seriously, I agree with the single rod advise purely due to ease of changing swims plus the need these days of going lighter (age!)

Nature continues to pay for water companies greed and non investment

Whilst not a fan of Water Co's at all, I have to say I was impressed with a leak repair I reported recently. A couple of weeks ago I noticed water bubbling out of a pavement near a parade of shops. Thinking that a shop keeper would report it, I didn't do anything. However, a week later, whilst...

Nature continues to pay for water companies greed and non investment

Good for Fergal and his club, but the issue of water extraction, pollution, non-investment in reservoirs etc is now so huge that it will take years for things to improve. As with most things that are bad about the human race, greed is at the heart of the problem. Foreign owned water companies...

    Cows

Talking of bulls, I'm just glad the river was between me and this fella! 😂

    Rudd & roach

I love my barbel fishing but because I live in Norfolk where they no longer exist (apart from some rumours of single fish) I have to travel to catch them. However, what we do have here are The Broads and the networks of rivers connecting them. Yesterday I spent a wonderful few hours on the Bure...

    Temu (again)

I guess there's a "morality" issue here as well as personal information security? So many items these days are made in "sweat shops" which to us in the affluent West would be abhorrent. However in many communities its the only way to support a family. Difficult choice, to buy or not to buy from...

    Temu (again)

I know there has been some discussion about this on-line retailer before but I hadn't looked at their website until today. I was chatting to my sister-in-law today about Temu as she ordered a bread bin (!) from them. It took a month to arrive from China and when she got she reckoned it was so...

    New Age Of Barbel Fishing

Just to put a different "spin" on this topic: I live in Norfolk. We used to have barbel in the Wensum and occasionally one would turn up in the Upper Bure. After the mass release of otters in Bungay years ago, the barbel have been wiped out. So, to satisfy my desire to catch whiskers I travel to...

    Heat!

This whole question of DO (dissolved oxygen) levels is fundamental to running a fishery and understanding how it affects fish welfare. Our small club in Norfolk have had to get to grips with this as we nearly lost all our fish a few years ago when DO levels crashed. The EA stepped in and saved...

    Wading trousers

Since putting up this post I have become rather obsessed with comparing different makes of wading trousers. It is true (as in most cases) "you get what you pay for", but one thing that I'm struggling with is the lack of technical information on retailers websites. In particular "breathability"...
