    Acolyte Ultra Question?

The 13ft Ultra will be a bit under-gunned for those chub near snags. It will be very enjoyable to use, but I would use a Plus for Chub. I've had several larger fish on the 13ft Ultra, including a 6lb Sea Trout, but it was hard work and I was never really in control. Use a Plus for Chub. Pete

Autumn wye barbel approach (this weekend! )

I am no expert on the Wye but fished last week. Placed my friend in a deep swim, probably the deepest part of the river in that area and he had 4 barbel during the day on boilies. I roved around and fished 6 swims, all significantly shallower, faster swims, and only had x2 chub. So my advice is...

    River Brolly Stress

I took a hacksaw to my brolly pole, took off 18" and now it's perfect. Cut off the top of the tube, not the pointy end. 👍

    Meat fishing a nearside slack

Does the big lump of meat work in crayfish infested rivers? I am concerned that the little gits will form a rugby scrum around the meat.

    Trotting for barbel

I've been using the Cadence CR10 15ft Match #2, landed double figure barbel no problem, very good rod. Can't beat a centre pin. Favorite line is Silstar Match Team in 10lb, fished straight through to hook. No split shot to weaken the line, only ollivettes and float stops. Banded pellet or meat...

River Wye, Creel Stretch Wye and Usk Foundation.

Be careful of the banks, especially if it's wet. I would be looking for the fast water, just below shallow section. Use heavy tackle, 10lb + line, usual pellets/meat, etc... lovely place to spend the day. Worth trying trotting if you can find a nearside steady run, I had a nice 8lb barbel at the...

    Trotting success

Thanks, I was not sure about trotting pellets, they seem so unnatural, but after feeding for 10 min the barbel seemed to switch on to them.

    Trotting success

Just wanted to share my trotting success, have had a few barbel on the float over the years but never a multiple catch. Had x5 on the float yesterday on the Wye, all on trotted 8mm pellets under a 6g Slider float. 10lb match team line and a 14 hook, banded pellet. Feeding slow and regularly. I...

Tackle that has gone up in value

I had a clear out of my tackle shed last weekend, found x5 Bass lures now out of production, apparently worth £15 each now, only paid £5.

Drennan Martin Bowler 12ft 2.25lb t/c Barbel rods

I have one, they are designed for big rivers and heavy gear, if used in this context they are very good rods. The bend is really nice once you are into a good fish, not too broomhandle. They a very light to hold and the line guides are superb. They do not take a center pin reel, the first guide...

winter fishing and gas dont work well ?

The Cobb looks great, I've owned various hot smokers but that looks very compact and versatile, need to get one now. Thanks for sharing.

winter fishing and gas dont work well ?

That's cool. I use a Coleman Sportster with Aspen 4 fuel, works well down to minus temps, but they can be a bit fierce and incinerate your pies.

    New Winter suit

Does anyone have experience of Halkon Hunt clothing? If you have the choice between Deerhunter Muflon and Halkon Hunt what would you go for?

Drennan Acolyte Plus 10ft Feeder Rod

Hi Stuart, I have the Acolyte Plus 11ft Feeder rod and have used it a lot but find it too mid-actioned for larger Chub who like to dive under near-side cover and with such a flexible rod you can't bully them out. It is a good rod for smaller chub and roach/perch, but not for 5lb+ chub. Just my...

    Mono Hooklinks - advice

A mono hooklink with a knotless knot and hair will be fine. 2 to 3ft long should be fine. Guru N gauge is fine, as would Big Game - even for a hooklink. Ditch the combi-rig and braided hair, you don't need it for the Wye, think simple and strong. I normally get through a lot of hooklengths in a...

Martin Bowler Specialist Barbel 12ft 1.75lb

Hi Ian, these are great rods, I have a 1.75 and a 2.25. They have a very nice action even though they don't have many rings. They are nice and light to hold with plenty of power if you need it. Reels: my Diawa Regal 4050 fits well but I imagine any medium sized reel would fit. The only minor...
