    Boom!

That's my point, to keep it 'balanced' a 12lb hooklink will need a 15lb boom section and an 18lb mainline. people are suggesting hooklinks and boom sections that come in a minimum of 20lb so will need a 25lb mainline(?) or is my 'balanced' approach old fashioned?

    Boom!

I've been tempted to use a boom section for some time now, mainly because I fish rocky rivers but like a long hook link so rather than use a metre of braid I'd like to use maybe 250mm of braid and 750mm of tough boom section. The extra knots/loops/crimps don't bother me or put me off but the...

    Short rods for Barbel

When fishing the Nidd and the Swale I use an 11ft rod rather than 12 ft and even that small reduction in length can make the difference between a tight swim being fishable or not.

    River Trent float rig.

I'm fine with a centre pin, spent a lot of time on the Tees and Wear catching Dace, Grayling and Chub, but I'm a little daunted at the prospect of a heavy Trent Barbel, in a strong current stripping a huge amount of line. Am I over thinking it?

    River Trent float rig.

Great post (and subsequent replies) as it happens I'm off to the Trent at the end of the month to try and catch my first float rod Barbel. I've taken heed of your advice and ordered a few things, but I wonder Whether you're using a centre pin or fixed spool reel?

    Hook types...

I use the Drennan Specialist Barbel Hooks for everything except big chunks of meat or slugs (where I prefer a large wide gape).

    Fishing line change

I bought a line counter (that sea anglers use) about 15 years ago, with that and a calculator I can fill empty spools with the exact amount of backing and mainline, never been more than a couple of metres out.

    VERY Waterproof jacket

Bought mine Jan 2022, superb, can wear it over my huge fox sherpa hoody and be toastie and dry, bought it purely for the rivers but use it for all my fishing.

Shimano XT RB 6000 vs Shimano 6000D

Just bought a pair of the XT 6000 RB's to put on my Chimera 3's (8000's were a little too big). Used them on the Trent last week, very nice. Got a couple of dozen baitrunners ranging from 4000 to Big longcasts. These feel just like the rest of them.

    Gripper or Anchor?

Just about to order some 6 and 8oz leads for my first visit to the tidal Trent. I've always used normal gripper leads but I'm wondering if the 'new' anchor style leads are an improvement or do they just look nice?

    VERY Waterproof jacket

I replaced my old Falklands army surplus jacket last year with a French army camo goretex under £50 (brand new) and it's absolutely superb.

    Korum Barbel rod

In desperation a couple of years ago I switched to 2 rods and because, for me, things must match it meant buying a new pair of rods. I got a pair of Korum 12 foot 2lb'ers for £100 and although the cork isn't the best quality I can't fault 'em.
