Back in the close season last year our Bailiffs found an unattended rod fishing from a house on the opposite bank to one of our waters. Video evidence was taken of everything. They managed to snag the line which had big lead bolt rig, very heavy line and boilies. The drag was loose and we...
I get my big roach on the 010 Graham , also had about 50 Barbel since November on the 010. Its an amazing line, I do wrap the spade ends 20 times though.
Not sure how good it is for mainline though Dave and 100m lasts me a lot of hooklengths. The stroft GTM I use is an off clear line, I know they do a number of different colours though but have not been tempted to look at anything else yet. I was thinking about posting a thread about it on the...
Round shot bitten onto the line weakens it slightly. If they are stuck in place and catch in a snag the line breaks easier. If the styl leads all move up the line to the knot they seem to not cause as many problems and I get broken less.
I use a hook length because its easier to tie on a new hook length than a whole new set up and a new float. Four years ago I started using Stroft GTM as a hook length its a slightly grey / clear line. I have used Preston powerline, Preston exceed and Silstar match team as hook lengths. I rate it...
Oh Edward, what I have heard recently about the Windrush must be soul destroying. I often fished the section down to the confluence with the Thames back in the 80's. Crystal clear fast flowing water with Barbel drifting between the wonderful streamer weed. I once won a match fishing the last...
Lets be honest fishing all over the country unless well looked after or heavily stocked has gone down the pan the last 30 years. The Trent is fishing its nuts off because of the hundreds of thousands of Barbel stocked by Calverton over the last 30 years. The tiny upper Lea stretch is an...
Did it last year also after dark, rested my Chimera and landing net pole on the side of my car whilst I put the rest of my gear in the boot. I always put the rod and pole in the front seat. Got home and No rod, drove back to my car park and there was the rod and landing net pole lying in the...
In the 80's we were told he lived in the big Manor house with the lake and swimming pool on the right as you walked down the alley to the canal at Shipton. There was a pair of Irish wolf hounds that would often escape and be bouncing around. In summer almost every weekend live bands would be...
I used to get a lot of carp many years ago on the canal at Tring fishing matches. The carp up to around 15lb used to lie between the point of the boat and the bank on the far side. The cast had to go right into the gap to get a bite. They would often cut anglers off by running down the boat the...
Heard a story today from a Cherwell farmer sounds like it could be right. Apparently Richard Branson was given two otter cubs as a present. I seem to remember his house was at Shipton on Cherwell before he moved. Anyway the semi tame Otters escaped and he offered the locals a couple of first...
My local Aldi are selling crane Aluminium thermal boot/shoe insoles in packs of 4 for £1.49. Felt on the top side and a thin aluminium on the bottom. They are supposed to reflect the heat back to the ground. I wore a pair of Aluminium thread woven socks last Winter with a second pair of socks...
You will find that bread mash with water in a bucket weighs a ton. If you rough/chunky liquidise loaves and keep in a bag and do not add water the bucket will be lighter to carry. You can then add water as you go if you want to and put the bags on top of the slop. You can always just squeeze...
We have 1000 cormorants in the Colne valley at the last official count a couple of years ago. If each bird takes 1kilo of fish a day (none of the cormorants I see are the small ) that is 254 tons of fish a year. I run a fishery on the river Colne West London and there a few silvers, to be honest...
Float fishing with maggots is best when you know exactly which swims the chub are in. If you do not know the area it might be worth trotting bread flake with bread mash or roughly liquidised (the cheaper option to maggot) and fishing the whole stretch for a day just to find out where the chub...
If you are going to catch big chub fish waters that hold them not all waters will do. Some local homework might help, you might have to travel. The best and most enjoyable way is trotting maggot. It seems you will be ledgering big Chub can be very careful feeders and will not often drag the rod...
The tackle box Dartford do an 11ft 3/4lb rod that might suit, its a very thin, soft, through action rod with stand off eyes. £44.99 plus £8 postage. I often fish small streams and would not touch a tip action rod, much preferring a soft forgiving through action. If you are set on 10ft, have...
With a barbless hook club rule I bend the point back towards the shaft slightly with style pliers on the Carp Barbless pattern. I may be wrong but I am sure that I loose less silvers bouncing off the hook that way.
