During this current heatwave I’m seeing plenty of references to dead barbel on the Trent, but as far as I have seen, there have been no reference to dead fish on any other rivers. Is there a problem on the Trent, more so than other rivers I wonder? Thankfully a bit cooler so far this week, in...
I caught a barbel from the Trent very early season a few years back, on holding it up to the camera I realised it had release hundreds of eggs on the unhooking matt, no one can tell me this happening more often can be anything but detrimental to future fish stocks. Personally I think a move of a...
Barbel and chub like the spicy stuff on the wharfe too, catching on it when the river was low, not had chance to try it out whilst rivers been up last week.
Some barbel were introduced on the Dearne before any official nra/ ea calverton stocking Jon. Nicked from the Trent and probably other rivers and put in the Dearne in the area that has traditionally done the biggest fish in the river. As early as 2004 fish of over 14lb were taken. These were not...
I wrote river stocks not barbel stocks, Howard.
As in, everything from minnows, bullheads and loach upward. The barbel population is only a small part of this. You tell me which rivers Otters have emptied of fish? It doesn't happen so the otter will carry on being protected, inspite of the...
Hmm , bad examples, that prove nothing-
A predator eating a swans (or any other birds eggs) is completely natural, watch a passion for angling- redmire dreams to watch a grebe taking a moor hens eggs....
A predator known for eating dead as well as live baits, picking up a dead bait for...
No really reasonable arguments to abolish.
Keep it as it is, or move it forward 2 weeks at either end for me.
Our river fish have enough pressures without angling leading up to and during spawning.

I believe the biggest known (at the time) barbel in Yorkshire was caught atleast 4 times in as many weeks at the start of one season a few years back..
Sort of on the same theme- there are some shocking (IMO) fish handling, including unnecessary out of water time, on many of the many youtube...
I use gorilla superglue, quite expensive v loctite ect, but its the only glue I've found that doesn't dry out or block the nozzle before you've used it all.
15gm is about a 5er, but should last a couple of seasons.
Jon
Maybe the country now, compared to when otter where last here in numbers has a far larger biomass of prey (ie fish) allowing them smaller territorys?
And by that I'm not saying that our rivers are overstocked (in lots of cases the opposite maybe true) but how many new bodys of water, often...
Not all no, but I ain't gunna stop buying a licence because of it.
There are some very valid comments on there, and I agree with quite a few. But there are also some comments that are cringeworthy and total nonsense.
