You're thinking of the wrong show Steve. The Big One, formerly known as the Davis Angling Show, started in Staines Town Hall in the early 90s and then moved to the dome at Thorpe Park. It then expanded to a large temporary construction in the car park at Thorpe Park before moving to Farnborough.
From what I've read recently it's more likely to be tournament casting rather than actual fishing. A specific skill that is measurable rather than the luck of the draw of a match.
You're right, on the TAF forum an old thread from 2013 has been resurrected after a member received threatening emails supposedly from the girlfriend of the claimed captor.

Ive just bought a small bag of fibre paste and am going to experiment with that. I'm trying water mixes rather than egg at the moment and whilst it works fine in slower currents it soon comes off in faster water.
I got there way later than I originally intended and then spent half an hour chatting to an old mate I met there. So I saw very little of the fishery or get to ask many questions. That said, my cheque & form will be in the post tomorrow.
According to the AT there are currently TWO claims being submitted. One is definitely from Marsh Farm and the other from from an un-named water although rumours (and there are always rumours) suggest that it is also from MF and could even be the same fish.
