Nutrabaits cranberry nutrafruit was a good bait for me, carp and tench loved it. Not sure if you can still get it but never seen it for years. Also the meaty marine stick mix in a tin.

I have a 123M that I used to use all the time, it still has concept 2000 line on it, nowt wrong with them!

If you want a fishing rod and not an ornament, Dave Lumb, not knocking any others (I can't, having no experience of them) but Dave makes a good rod, he'll build it to your preferred spec regarding rings, Cork etc. I've had quite a lot of rods made by Dave and all are excellent.

Yeah, I saw that a while back. I reckon with modern CNC machining, it would take a really bad machinist to knock out a reel that didn't perform modestly well. Taking into account most of them, including that one, are bearings.

Just had a spin of the NGT in my local shop. I don't know if I'm missing something but it seems perfectly usable to me and if the bearings aren't up to much for longevity, a simple fix down the line. It's light as a feather, no drag but a thumb would solve that and a positive feeling ratchet.

Thanks for the input guys. I think it's going to be an acolyte 14' specimen. I already have a few float rods that will cover almost everthing, in fact, I think this is just going to be an indulgence perhaps when the new season starts.
