The thing is Mike, like you I kept a note of my fishing adventures and wanted to "collate them" together. I jotted them down on a Word document over a matter of months and they kind of "developed" into a book!!
The barbel section is particularly dear to me as our "group" of guys have been having...
I decided to write about my fishing "life" which then developed into a book "Reeling Back the Years" (ISBN 9781035826223) and its now being sold on Amazon and on order through book shops.
You won't find any technical details in it, just a collection of fishing related adventures from across the...
I use a Korum Day Sack for short sessions. Not sure if it's still available. Had mine for years and very pleased with it. It forces me to take only what is necessary and not load up with too many cakes and pasties, so good for dieting as well!!
I agree with Ben's advice, a big lump of meat (flavoured with paprika often helps) fished on the lead.
Alternatively the "go to" pellets such as spicy sausage and halibut often work.
Never fished the beats you'll be on Fergal, but it's about assessing the river on the day. Levels will probably...
Good point about the acidity of the water Joe. You could see the influence of peat in the water colour in some of the rivers.
I just wish we had barbel back in my home county of Norfolk. Very sad day when they disappeared from the Wensum 😪
It's called fishing, not catching.
What's wrong with trying to outwit a fish using "normal" methods, and if it gets the better of you...tough. Just re-tackle, re-bait and try again.
I admire fish that are finicky feeders, its a challenge.
But that's just me I guess? 🤔
A week ago my wife and I were in Scotland as she was running in the Loch Ness Marathon (rather more brutal than she expected!!)
Anyway, we stayed up there for a few days to look around. The rivers were impressive. Many had fast sections but with areas of slack water. They seem ideal for barbel...
Whilst watching my static rod tip on the River Wye last week my attention was taken by this large insect that decided (unlike the barbel) that my halibut pellets were rather tasty. I have been told its a Sexton Beetle and it was rather impressive I have to say.
To coin a phrase Joe, to me, size really doesn't matter (!) When I trot the narrow, reed lined Upper Bure I am happy to catch anything.
On the morning I took that photo I caught chublets, dace, perch and even gudgeon. A deer was calling in the woods behind me (that "throaty" bark of theirs) I...
Upper Bure yesterday. Beautiful Norfolk landscape. Sadly the barbel have long gone, but most other river species here including some sizeable brown trout!
Currently watching the news on TV (suffering from Olympics overload!) and there's a special report on pollution in rivers.
Whilst it's great to have this subject kept in the spotlight, the news programme makers obviously think its a recent problem.
How many years have us anglers been banging on...
Fished the Wye (Pump House) on the penultimate day of the season in March with a couple of mates. They used a combo of meat and Pellet O's and caught just chub. I opted to fish with Vortex 14mm pellets and caught 4 x barbel, biggest 11lb 8oz. So, for me anyway, it will be Vortex this year...
