I have heard differing views on whether you should still have your bait in the river itself when it's flooded. I have always tried to do so, rather than fishing on what is normally the grass bank, fields etc but a friend of mine has caught when he was fishing "out of the river" on the bank where...
Great video Ian. Lee & me fished a few pegs upstream the day before (from the bank), but could only catch small roach & dace. In fairness, that's what I was targeting, and wasn't up for wading in those temperatures!
Happy new year pal.
There has been a similar debate on Facebook where the a few video clips of the match have been posted.
I agree that ideally weigh and release would be undertaken, but suspect on the Wye this might not be easy as the pegs are spread out over several miles.
Was interesting that a couple people...
(As a former match angler myself, there is nothing in match rules to say that a foulhooked fish should not count. Having spent a long time playing the fish he was always going to weigh it in. It was a big match with a lot of money at stake. No one has suggested that it should be returned and not...
As a former match angler I have fished quite a few over the years, but only the top 3 specifically for barbel (well I caught a barbel on the Trent, my first one, many years ago, whilst feeder fishing the Embankment in Nottingham)
Severn
Ribble
Trent
Exe
culm
huntspill
Brue
Tone
Lowman
Bristol...
Think you would need to go downstream a bit towards Bridgnorth for the nearest BAA stretches. Have a look on their website, but there Is Arley, the Golf Course, Knowle Sands and the new stretch just outside Bridgnorth to try.
I have a pair of Daiwa neoprene thigh waders. Nice and comfy and have had them several years.
However, the last few times I have worn them (in warm weather) with a bit of a walk to the river and moving between swims, I have ended up with my feet and legs really damp from condensation/sweat...
This has been discussed in a similar thread, but for ease I will repeat what I said there.
I use an Albright knot to join my short braid combi to my hook length, usually 20lb amnesia (I fish the Ribble so loads of rocks and boulders making a heavy durable hook length essential). A couple...
Not sure how much that Korum version is, but I bought something very similar on Ebay, a bracket that screws into a bank stick and holds your phone, with a very bright multi function light on top. Have used it with voice control and it works very well both in daylight and night. Also doubles as a...
Hi Ian,
As a recipient of some really helpful advice from you on Ribble barbel fishing with a float, I will definitely subscribe, and look forward to learning more this coming season.
All the best, Steve.
Worth a look as you are effectively buying 2 rods, a 1.75lb tip for general fishing normal conditions on medium to bigger rivers, plus a 2.25lb tip which is capable of fishing with big leads (unless you have to cast a long way). We use ours on the Ribble and I have fished 6oz leads in flood...
Yes, thats what I have. I thought they were still a little bigger ........a size 12 would be nice, but the 10's I find fine for larger baits like boilies.
Looks good. I saw something similar in Angling Direct recently - can't remember which brand, as the £95 price tag soon put me off looking closely! This one seems more reasonably priced. Might be useful when wading.
Bank tackle hooks are generally large.
I just wish they did some in size 12 as I think their hooks are about one size bigger than most of their competitor brands. I use them in size 10, but it's bigger than some size 8's i have from other manufacturers.
Am sure some locals will give you some up to date advice, but until covid me and a group of mates would holiday in Bridgnorth every year for a week in September. We would buy the BAA ticket, good value even at £40ish.
Have fished most of the BAA stretches, my favourites being Knowle Sands...
