I was in shock when I posted earlier, just want to add my own condolences to Steve's family and close friends, very, very sad day, Rest in Peace Steve.

Not sure about the "dying on it's backside comment", I am looking in about 10 times a day at the moment and still struggling to keep up with reading all new posts........... I think it is as lively and healthy as ever, the faces change, emotions rise and fall but on the whole it is a healthy forum.
I don't fish for barbel nearly as much as I used to but I still pop on here many times per day, it is a great resource and the catalyst of many of my fishing friendships and long may it continue.
I would agree with Tim. The biggest common factor in line with difficulty in catching barbel (I will not use the term "reduced numbers" as on many rivers this is simply not the case) is the dramatic rise in "specimen barbel anglers". You can even track this across rivers. For example the Kennet...
Nothing wrong with braided mainline apart from the cost. Used 25lb power pro for years but went back to mono as I wanted some stretch. If you are using braid make sure you are using forgiving rods or you will pull hooks.
I use power pro for all my predator fishing pretty much, no need to get...
Martin James has a great method, he sets his rods about 8inches apart and has a small torch with a spike and swivel mount which he pushes in the ground between them, the torch shining along the whole length of the rods, very effective.
