    Car boot buy

Best car boot buy I ever made was a job lot bundle of rods, cost me £2. Among the bundle was a traditional 3 section split cane Avon rod with rusty rings and covered in thick varnish. When I stripped it back I discovered a Bob South well shop label on the butt section. After refurbishment I used...

    2 x Daiwa Emcast 3500br Reels

Bargain! I'd be tempted if I didn't already have a trio of the Emcast 4000BR.

Darent Valley 13ft 2 piece specialist float rod.

I'm a little surprised at Christian Tyroll's comment about it being floppy, although I don't have this rod I do have the 11' Specialist 0.75 and the 11' twin tip 1.25 Avons from Darent Valley and find them to have quite a stiff action and plenty of power. Perhaps the 13' float is on a different...

Wanted-Cadence 15ft #3 float rod could swap for diawa connoisseur

Keith Speer, who was a great float angler on the Lea, caught many doubles using a Drennan Tench Float. Possibly some of his writings may be in the archives on here? Rod power isn't always needed for playing barbel on the float, I've landed some to around 8 pounds on a Drennan Matchpro when after...

How much are you prepared to spend…

Only have two club tickets now, one is gratis as a bailiff, the other £40. Used to have two others but can't find the time to fish all the river stretches I've got so gave them up. On the tackle front I don't remember the last time I bought any rod or reel new, nearly all mine are second hand...

Old centrepin - no longer required.

I assume you're talking trotting with the 14' Acolyte. The Marco Cortesi reels are great value for money, I find mine ideal for running a 6gram float.

    Your angling journey.

No family members fished so it wasn't until I went to secondary school in 1960 that I was introduced to fishing. My early outings, armed with a 10'6" rod, two sections of whole cane and a glass top and a cheap centre pin, were to the Thames at Hampton Court. I think the first fish I caught from...

    Roach

Good signs for the future on the Severn, been fishing a maggot feeder as backup to my float fished worm while perch fishing and catching lots of roach in the 6"-8" bracket, with a few better ones to over a pound. Yesterday the quiver tip never stopped moving from the moment the feeder settled.

    Perch

All the ones on float fished worm have been in slow moving areas, normally laying on, or with bait touching bottom. Ones in the flow have been on static ledgered baits, whether that be worm, maggot or small livebaits, big perch LOVE bleak, find a concentration of bait fish and the perch won't be...

    Perch

They don't always hang out in the slacks, had quite a few decent ones over the years out in the flow. My best from Rossall was a 2.09 from the bottom peg, as you know that is fairly fast flowing.

    Perch

Nigel, the Lymm stretch above the Tern confluence would be my recommendation, particularly the slower deeper water at the upper end. I also think Rossall might hold some.

    Perch

Best of 7 today, 3 pounds exactly, a couple of 2's, the rest a pound or under. All on float fished worm, 15' Preston Carbonactive Excel.

    Isotopes

In the past I did my rods with isotopes flat, take off tip ring then shrink wrap isotope in place before refitting tip ring. Sounds a lot of faff but really quite straightforward. I'm now using the clip on LED tip lights from Temu, much easier and a heck of a lot brighter than isotopes.

    Perch

With the Severn lower and clearer this week I concentrated on float fished worm for perch. Managed 11 in total with a best of 2.04, had a barbel rod out as well and picked up a couple of 8's.

    Grayling

Good point Chris, the Irfon fish were used to seeing corn back then as my friend used to bait heavily with it for the chub.

    Grayling

Used to get a lot of grayling on corn when fishing the Irfon in Builth years ago.

    Wanted 15ft float road

I have the old Preston Innovations Excel as my 15' float rod, man enough for chub and barbel but still light enough for grayling. My preferred grayling rod though is my 13' Matchpro.

    Isotope help please!

Not had any problems with mine, though I used to get occasional wraps with the Enterprise ones. In the past I did modify a pair of Fox rods using shrink tube. Took tip ring off, then sleeved with white shrink tube before fitting the isotope using clear shrink tube. Definitely not as visible as...

I have these too and they are brilliant (literally!)
