I don't fish overly long hooklengths....2 foot being the longest I'd guess? These fish were hooked over big beds of particles using particle sized baits and I think they were simply grazing the baited spot, taking the bait into their mouths and trying to take it back to their throat...
Morning All,
Just recently I've had a few fish that have taken the bait well back into their throats and have caused a little "fuss" in the un-hooking process....I hasten to add before the Barbel Police start their sirens that no fish have been harmed in the making of this...
As I've gotten older I find I'm using the following text speak more and more:
ATD At the Doctors
BFF Best Friends Funeral
BTW Bring the Wheelchair
FWIA Forget Where I am
GGPBL Gotta Go - Pacemaker Battery Low
GHA Got Heartburn Again
HGBM Had Good Bowel Movement...
Don't we all??
I've not really got my Barbel head on this time round....the Lower Severn is too low and slow and the Teme really is on its bare bones:(:(
Hopefully a lot of rain will fall in Wales and just flush through and liven things up a bit....?
Paul
Dave,
I had a season on there and up at Diglis on the same ticket....typical Lower Severn stretch that can be either on or off really. I've had some decent Barbel down there and numbers of good Chub too :)

I can cast a small lead or float rig pretty well after a LOT of practice in the field at the bottom of the garden!!!
But, I find that once you start putting too much weight (ledger weight) into the equation it becomes more difficult to cast so I will always try and bait up spots under the rod...
To negate the need for a separate "dropper" rod I often attach a length of braid to my landing net handle, provided the depth is OK, and use that to drop the feed in;)
Paul
Gary,
I use a similar approach regularly on the Teme....I will bait up to 6 swims with a dropper or two of hemp/maggots and if I can wait, re-bait all 6 again before I set up a rod before I then literally drop into each swim in turn until I catch. If swim 1 fails to turn up a fish within 10...
very possibly....might be put off a little by the angling pressure though? Especially if the water is so low and clear and people start fishing for them on the spawning sites.
Paul
Julian,
Agree with your thoughts entirely mucker....only thing is, I can't not be there on the opening day :)
Might have a go for something different this year and have a dabble for a Barbel later in the day maybe?
Paul
