I was brought up fishing the trent with a Mitchell match, I'm pretty sure they could still do the business nowadays.. my next one would be an Abu 506m, with the pawl removed...

Daiwas have always been great reels, they have just got really expensive recently and now get to a point of justifying buying them now...

The Conny/spectron 17/20, was rated at up to 10lb mainlines. It's quite tippy and will.suffice for roach etc, then the middle and buttsection kicks in for the power. At 17ft which is it's best length, it's perfect for Barbel. Not everyone's cup of tea, but at 17/20, I cant think of a better rod?

I stuck a ss2600 on both my 15 footers this year. I won't be going back to a smaller reel anytime soon....

In normal middle and Tidal, conditions a 1.75 will suffice... however, you will eventually be found out... so as Richard says 2.25 best bet given conditions. It's a difficult one as I met a mate a few weeks on the TT and he bagged a good 14lber, no probs on a 1.75 with maybe 5 foot extra on...

Weights fairly relative, sometimes an overly tip heavy rod, may be balanced with too small a reel. For me a rod 14ft and more so 15ft, that your trotting with all day should have; imo a heavier reel, to balance the l extra length and weight. You could have a perfect rod, that you may think is...

I totally get why you have done it, I'm sure it will be bang on. The only draw back, for me is how the splice interacts with the float, dependant on size... but by the picture, with weight applies, looks like u have got it... great idea 💡
