A very long shot, going back in time: Baits Online

Hi all, Massively taking a punt at this one but cast your minds back a good 10+ years and there was a bait firm start up by two chaps called Baits Online. They sponsored a few fish-ins and such like. I think the venture was fairly short lived though. I'm trying to track down the guys that...

    Prologic max suits?

I've had the 2 piece bib and brace job with jacket for about 4 years now and it's brilliant. Quality gear. I like the removable fleece on the jacket which is great for general wear on it's own and turns the garish* realtree coat into a nice lightweight jacket. * I wear it because I struggled to...

    Barbel tackle and set up

Hi Alex, I work over in the fair country of Suffolk bit live over in the Ouse valley. It's a tough old place to fish nowadays but they're still about. Drop me a PM if you like, there's a Barbel Society get together on the Ouse in September, you'd be more than welcome to join in and the guys will...

    F.A.O:Garlic Spam Aficionados

I've tried those ready to go meals, they're not too bad actually! Cooked up in a mess tin with some of that packet Uncle Bens rice and it's cheap and easy to get some chow on the bank. I like the fact they're in packets too so not very bulky to carry to your swim. Must stock up before I head...

    Looking for a new water

Noooooooooooooo our local river needs anglers to keep at it. The more anglers that keep leaving the banks the more neglected it becomes. Yes it is hard but the rewards are there for the taking. There's still a lot of very, very big fish in the river. If there's nobody fishing for miles of river...

Impact of wels catfish on barbel populations

I'd imagine that as an apex predator they wouldn't do us any favours but then I'm not a scientist. I know of a handful of big cats that occasionally get caught on the middle/lower Gt Ouse but wouldn't know if they've bred or escaped.

Keep moving or sit it out?

That's pretty much the same approach that has always done it for me Ash. I guess I'm just trying to think a little outside the box and look for something different than the few others that still fish the river! I do know that I'm itching to get back out there but can't do so until Friday.

Keep moving or sit it out?

As I say it's a very lightly fished stretch of river. I've tried the mobile approach and have walked miles and put a bait everywhere I can. The problem is there literally is too many features and they could be anywhere! Basically there's a very small head of fish on a very long, lightly fished...

Keep moving or sit it out?

Eight blanks is nothing - like I say if you get 3 or 4 fish all season then it's not been a bad one, I think my best run of blanks is 21/22! Two rods is only possible in very few swims, it's not something I like doing really but you never know, a change from what everyone else has been trying...

Keep moving or sit it out?

That sounds like a sensible compromise Ben. I don't really like the whole sitting it out thing as I'm constantly thinking where the fish could be holding. I think what I'm going to try this week is set up camp in a swim I have in mind where they have to run through from two main bits of river...

Keep moving or sit it out?

Couldn't decide whether to post this on the Ouse thread or on here. I'm guessing on here I'd get a varied response as the Upper Ouse is similar to places such as the Kennet, Loddon, W.Avon etc. I find myself at bit of a crossroads here and wondered if I could hear some different viewpoints...

    Planning for the glorious 16th

It's all resting on my training schedule with this new job - being the highly organised global superpower that they are, I shouldn't expect any dates given to me without much more than a few days notice. Ideally I'll be able to take the week off, however if not then I'll be leaving work at half...

    Useful Items

Oh Howard I understand you there, for some reason I'm very particular with baiting needles and I don't know why. I must have spent a good 15 minutes evaluating every single baiting needle in the shop a few weeks back. I could feel the stares glaring at me from all around. In the end, and with my...

End of an era or dawn for change?

Nah I let my membership lapse when I took a Barbel break - got somewhat distracted by beer and females and what. Now I'm all settled and grown up(ish!) I got back into dangling a couple of seasons back and renewed my membership this year.

End of an era or dawn for change?

Tony, all going well there's going to be a new region set up for the Ouse/Ivel/Nene area anglers in the next few months. Myself and a lovely chap from Nene country are both in the planning stages for an inaugural meeting in the Autumn. As soon as we have dates, speakers, a pile of raffle prizes...

End of an era or dawn for change?

Ahh sod it I was hoping I wouldn't stick out that much  I was going to enquire where the best shad fishing was as I had the rods in the car....... Nah seriously it was a Saturday night, in the close season. I may aswell drive 97 miles to chat about Barbel fishing than sit at home...

End of an era or dawn for change?

Well said Neil. I was there last night too, didn't know if any BFWers would be there or not...... I was the chap with long hair and flat cap hoping that the West Midlands immigration patrols wouldn't catch me out of the Ouse valley.

End of an era or dawn for change?

Why don't you go along to a regional meeting or the annual show next month and find out? Or even more simple, and it is almost too easy, ask Pete Reading himself. He is in a much better position to answer your question than me. There is also a list of the R&C projects on the BS website. You'd be...

End of an era or dawn for change?

The reason I re-joined was primarily to aid the R+C work. This can't be carried out without money in the pot. I paid my 35 quid not for me, not so I can get a couple of magazines a year or have the chance to fish somewhere different, I look beyond what's in it for me and more so what I think the...

    Centre pins

I have the Okuma Aventa Pro and one of the Marco Cortesi (who is he anyway?!) pins. I really do like the Okuma, it's well made, gives off a nice feeling of quality and spins wonderfully although I primarily use it for lead work. The Cortesi pin is very nice for the money, I have it on my...
