A change in forum software is ... here... UPDATE

Looks good, no problem apart from Firefox warning, same as Paul Collins reported.

Long trotting big baits for chub

The late Keith Speer always used to fish with braid main line, I'm sure there must be some of his informative articles in the archives but I can't find them!

    Grayling for the pot

I don't see anything wrong with doing it, most clubs rules forbid it however, but I've been considering taking the odd one myself on waters where the rules allow it.

    Night Floats

Reminds me of how we used to float fish at night when I was a kid, a good old fashioned bicycle headlamp that you could set low on the bank and aimed on the float.

    Perch

Been using Mustad Demon circle hooks in size 4 for fishing both lobworms and livebaits on my last two outings and not lost a fish, all hooked neatly in the scissors. This one yesterday took a lip hooked 4" dace.

    'Slick' braid

Used to use original PP in 20lb for barbel but tried the Slick 8 in 15lb for light lure fishing. Didn't find it particularly reliable for that so recently switched to Kastking braid which has been super value and had no problems with it, seems far less prone to "wind knots" than PP.

    4 inch pin?

I have both a Speedia wide drum, not the deluxe version, and a Mordex Merlin. Of the two I prefer the Merlin as it has a better retrieve, the Speedia needs a lot of packing to increase the drum diameter as the pillars are set so far in. They both get used for static work mainly, though the...

Shimano 4000D or Daiwa Whisker SS2600

That handle is for US market where it is sold as a saltwater spinning reel, the other style handle for the UK market seems harder to get at a good price, probably because it's aimed at carp anglers! Don't own a 4000D, but do have several other Shimano models and an Emcast BR, I'd say the...

Talk to me about float rods

Does anyone have one of these? http://www.tacklebox.co.uk/rods-en/specialist/specialist-rods/tackle-box-darent-valley-13ft-2-piece-specialist-float-rod.html I have the 11' Specialist which I use for perch and chub but would like to know more about this new 13' one, it's rated for lines to 8lbs.

If Maple 8 came back would you buy it ?

I would certainly buy it if it came back, apart from boilies for barbel it also makes a great paste for crucians, down to about half a bag now which won't last long.

    Fish spotting glasses

Good thread, I have Specsavers prescription varifocals with polarised lenses, unfortunately they are grey tint so I tend to use my everyday varifocals with brown tinted polarising overglasses for fish spotting. I am due another eye test in a couple of months and will check out ASDA for new glasses.

So how did it go ?

The same Severn stretch which treated me to a 10 hour blank last year was kinder this year, first barbel came just after 1 am, second one 4 hours later and then a chub before packing up at 7am. All others I spoke to only caught up to about 5am, nothing moving after that.

    Best time for catching...

Time of day is pretty much irrelevant, provided you can find the fish and they're feeding then you will catch. Having said that though I will acknowledge that, on pressured stretches, your chances go up at dusk and into first hour or so of darkness.

    Polaroids

I'd agree on that, I have some EyeLevel polarised overglasses in a "copper" tint and they are far better for fish spotting than my grey-lensed prescription Polaroids.

    barbel rod

Rod choice is a personal thing, I had a pair of the original 1.75 Prodigy barbel rods and always felt they were a little underpowered even though friends loved them and even thought the 1.5 version was powerfull enough. I changed to a pair of the twin tip Duo-lites about 3 years back and feel...

A New Season is upon us, but what will you do differently?

After next week I'm off to Florida and only back two days before the river season starts so, apart from opening day, I'll be making up for missed tenching time through June and July, hope that they've switched on by then because so far they haven't been very obliging for me!

    Confused ? Duo-Lite® - Rod 12ft 1.75-2.25lb Twin Tip

Agree with all the above comments they are fine for "lobbing" big weights. I have a pair of these rods and regularly use 4oz feeders with the 2.25 tip section, they must weigh 6ozs when fully loaded, no trouble to get them out 30-40 yards. I use the 1.75 tips for my tench fishing and regularly...

    Rod license due Tomorrow

If you want to go fishing you'd better have your proof of purchase, story going around that there's a delay with printing the new ones and they won't get posted until next week at best! I pay by direct debit each year and they took my money on March 1st, same thing happened three years ago and...

Anyone got the Tench rods out yet?

Despite the cold east wind today the tench showed up for me, had 4 in a short (5 hour) session, best one going 6.12 with a backup male of 5.13.

Anyone got the Tench rods out yet?

Had a try last Thursday, enjoyed the change and some warm sunshine, however the tench did not put in an appearance. Hoping that last year's pattern repeats as it was my second trip that produced then, will let you know in two days!
