Welcome Anthony,
You will find a wealth of information here and also a great community of like minded people with a passion for barbel. Looking at your pictures, you are catching some lovely fish.
I went with the Cs7 4000 over the Cs10 4000 because the Cs7 has a slightly higher gear ratio, quicker for the retrieve. It's a very nice bit of kit and even better value if you buy now with the bogof deal. I have been eyeing up the Matrix HX pro though......
As its a water without much angling presence natural baits should work well for example worms, maggots or slugs. As already mentioned you could also do a campaign of pre baiting with cheap particles such as hemp, chickpeas, maize or some cheap pigeon conditioner to draw fish into and hold in...
Very interesting Daniel. Something i can try as i have a wormery and plenty of vermicompost. Also i have been thinking of trying strip's of liver as a bait. I think some liver blitzed in a blender and added to some groundbait would work like a charm in a feeder. Thanks for the tips.
Fish care is of upmost importance to my fishing no matter what species of fish that i'm targeting and Richard is right that certain hard fighting species, Barbel, Pike, Grayling need that extra bit of care for recovery. It's something that I was taught as a youngster and when ever I'm teaching...
I add reports as and when I get a chance to go fishing and try to add some information on the conditions. I will report on bad days too as this in my mind gives a better overview on how I have got on. No point in painting a picture of success when sometimes you can't get a bite no matter what...
I think the whole bare blank weighs 124g as I was told from Harrison's. I'm awaiting delivery of it at the moment but will weigh it and let you know when it arrives.
Well done Andrew, a cracking session made possible by ringing the changes in your approach to bait. I always take multiple different baits with me as you never know what the fish are wanting. Maggots from my local tackle shop are £4 a pint.
Cheers for the advice Ian, don't worry I'm not about to spend all my money on a Chris Lythe reel just yet. I'm going to make do with my Marco Cortesi for awhile, a bargain reel i picked up for £10. I need to get better at Wallis casting first. Time will tell if centerpins suit my style of...
Thanks Ian for posting up your honest opinions about these beautiful centerpins. I like to hear your opinions on these things as your a man that has much experience in this field and thankfully you will sing the praises of a quality product. Which these days is a hard thing to find. After...
If the reel was fine before repooling then it's something that has been introduced while respooling, first thing I'd be looking at is it something I've done ie introduced some twist which has altered the line lay. If it's a new reel then as Ben mentioned add more shims to correct.
Hi Wayne, my first question's would be is this a new reel? Or is this a reel that was working fine but was stripped of old line and respooled? If it's yes to first question and you are confident that you respooled correctly then it could be a faulty reel. If yes to the second question then I'd...
The river Chew in Keynsham was the first river i fished that held a variety of coarse fish. Before that i was only able to fish my local Cam brook which only had trout and minnows. We used to fish in the park in Keynsham from the weir to where it joins the Bristol Avon as it was free to fish. On...
Your probably right there Neil, as I should of said that it's a tactic I've learnt fishing on the river Wye. When I used to fish the bristol avon or smaller rivers like the chew or frome in years past I'd never dream of making such a splash if I ever wanted to catch anything.
I picked up a Gardner sling/unhooking mat second hand. Lovely bit of kit as its plenty big enough to weigh the fish with but not so bulky that it cant be stuffed into the side pocket of my carry bag. I think there available for about £39.99 new.
Trying not to make a splash or disturbance was something I was always taught when I started fishing, so as not to spook the fish. When I started barbel fishing I thought no way am I going to catch anything lobbing these big old feeders and weights out with a massive sploosh but soon learned that...
I've also been taking a couple of friends fishing lately who are new to barbel fishing that brought some ready made short 12" hair rig hook lengths and to be honest I've noticed less action on their rods I think due to the shorter length and maybe fish spooking off the weight/feeder so I tied...
