Quick change hook rig - Korda Hook Klips

With you on this David . Without googling the words I honestly do not know what is being talked about here ,wafter , ronnie rig , aligners, kicker ? Line , hook ,lead , bait , that's it for me . I often think we massively over think things when Barbel fishing , they are not the cleverest of...

    Barbel

Hello Gary . My comments were general remarks , I have only fished the Ribble once and that was for Salmon , good to hear there are plenty of Eels around, they are still uncommon in the Yorkshire rivers I fish , but 10 years a go using spam for Barbel in the summer would have attracted the Eels...

    Barbel

Would endorse most of the tips given . If the river you are fishing is match fished , pay a visit at the weigh ins , see if barbel have been caught or anglers reporting being broken by large fish .As Mr Craine suggests visiting a river when the water is very low can reveal likely looking spots ...

    Small river Rod recommendation

I just said have a look Neil , not liberate the moths from your wallet , hibernating between the white fivers and ten bob notes ! The rod I mention does feel nice in the hand and I think it would suit for a small river situation . The only criticism I have is the one I bought [ new] had a...

Have you ever caught a barbel on one of these?

Caught them on dead minnows in fast shallow water early season

    A very nostalgic film

Now that was a great watch , and a masterclass on how to hook and play good sized Barbel on relatively light tackle , looks like Fred was using a MK1V Avon rod , no 2.5 lb TC rods , baitrunners, bite alarms and rod tip pointing to the sky , excellent , thanks for sharing

    Go to hookbaits

If boilies are visual and a red flag in daylight , I cannot really see how a big lump of pink spam makes the barbel throw caution to the wind in the daytime ! Thats coming from a big spam fan , Barbel love it in any conditions

    Wye Lea Fishery River Wye

No problem John , it's a nice stretch , 4 of us fished it on a hot summers day but we all caught Barbel and chub , if I remember correctly we got instructions to get there from a tackle shop in Ross on Wye ,but don't hold me to that it was a number of years a go

    Wye Lea Fishery River Wye

I fished this stretch a number of years a go , the only thing I can confirm is that the walk down to / up from the river is steep and if you wanted to drive to the rivers edge a 4x4 would be the only guaranteed method of driving to the bank side safely , hope this is of some help

    Interesting Vid from Mark Tunley

If I am honest I don't really understand the physics of all this , the bit I think I understand is the effect of elasticity and 'give' in rods and lines when playing fish . I believe that using a bendy , all through action rod and monofilament main line [ not pre stretched or low stretch types]...

    Boom!

I sort of get this argument of presenting a bait 'naturally' when looked at in a clear river where maybe you are close to the fish , in essence stalking it ,and don't wan to spook them but want to place the bait near the fish without scaring them , but basically when you are ledgering you are...

    Carp gear for Barbel

Just as an aside to this debate . I came across that carp fishing programme on the telly the other day , can't remember the fellas name but basically they just sit in bivvies for days on massive lakes abroad and try to out do each other with who's fish is going to be bigger . They were catching...

    Interesting Vid from Mark Tunley

Ian , I think you have summed up perfectly what is mean't by balanced tackle , I would also add that the use of mono mainline with its inherent stretchiness [ is that a word? ] also helps with playing fish in that it allows a certain give when a fish lunges , unlike braid which has no stretch...

    Boom!

I have read through this thread carefully and others of a similar nature and one thing continually crops up and that is the unpredictable breaking strain/durability of flurocarbon and braid .There is clearly an issue here ,surely if the stated breaking strain is unpredictable it must negate...

    Carp gear for Barbel

Trevor , I think you have raised a few hackles by the language / wording you use in your posts ,''crude ' ,''brutal'' , 'bone idle '' , it's hardly going to endear you to folks is it ? With regard to the subject , I think you need to use tackle suitable to the conditions . When the river isn't...

    Thames Barbel

Look at the image of the chap holding the current British record[ 21 lb 2 oz] in the BFW gallery, and then compare to the image of the Thames fish which is supposed to be even bigger ,hmm....
