    Tackling a new swim

I now use a smart cast, it has saved me hours of time when looking at a new stretch of the Thames. Thought i new a certain stretch well after spending hours in the closed season with a plumbing outfit, then trotted a smart cast through the same stretch and found loads of very interesting...

    Triangular Landing Nets.

Wychwood are now producing a 30/32 inch pan net for around £25. it has a magnet in spreader block that base of the net stick too. It is a better size for barbel then the Drennan net. I use my drennan net for chub.

    Penn Slammer Live Liner

Hi Sam, I use the old 460 live liner holds 300 metre of 100lb Berkley braid. Great for cat fishing close in for my trips to France. They have new models out now 4500 300yd of 8lb line, 6500 330yd 12lb, 7500 440yd 15lb, 8500 440yd 20lb, 9500 360yd 30lb and 10500 415yd 30lb might get some of these...

    Rod sling

Don't know what size reel you use! but a drennan specialist rod sleeve should fit. Some rods ie harrison do not fit into some rod sleeve's as sleeve's are to short for the rod. Use the sleeve with a quiver so that you can put it into your car on its own, no heavy brolly pressing onto your rod. I...

    waterproof chair covers

get some chest waders. Breathable ones are the best as you don't sweat as much. I have a Leeda pair. I cut the boots off so that i can roll them over a decent pair of boots for walking or wellies if its p#####g down.

    2.25 tc rods

Hi Luke, I use a Harrison chrimera su 12ft test curve? Harrisons do not quote one. For my flood fishing on the Thames. I use it with either a shimano 8,000 or 10,000 baitrunner. It will cast really large feeders but unlike carp rods that i have used on the river, the tip does not bend when all...

    Carp Rods

I own more than my fair share of carp rods, from 2lb up to 3.25lb. Some cost a fortune others £30. These £30 rods are jrc rods of 3lb tc i have three of these and i use them in France for my Carp trips. I have caught carp to over 40lbs on these and cats to over 70lbs. I must say they are the...

    harrison rod

In the past i have phoned Harrison's directly and they have been very helpful. I have also sent them one of my rods so that they could build a new rod so that it was an exact match.

    Shimano 5000

Luke, Can't you send them for a service, as Dave said! I had some of the new versions and they were rubbish. Line lay was awful, gave them away. You could also try some 6000 not much difference in weight and larger spools. Paul. Ps have you been out at all seems an age since Guy and i wet a line.

    Adding garlic flavour

As above. Try a farm shop or animal feed shop. Garlic is sold as a horse food additive. Much cheaper than health food shops, other thing you try is good oil (Hemp oil) from Waitrose,

    Budget Cat rod

Howard, Have a look at the penn 760 live liners hold 300m of 100lb braid, baitrunner and super smooth front drag. They are designed for sea fishing and braid line. Trust me you won't break them they are bomb proof.

    Reels

Just seen on the web you can get a Penn 560 liveliner (slammer) for £75. Holds around 310m of 12lb only prob one spool. Trust me you won't break it. I use the 760 which holds 340m 20lb The main shaft is as thick as a pencil. Heard a lot of people are using these on the Ebro.

    Reels

Don't touch the shimano baitrunner ST RA line lay is rubbish. Had three and gave them away. Have a look at wychwood solace 10ACS. I have a pervios wychwood model and have caught cats to nearly 100lbs with it in France. About £75 i think?

    Reels

Hi Paul, I own and use shimano 4000, 5000, 6000, 8000 and Penn slammers. 4000, 5000 are to small if you are using 12lb line and are casting too the far bank of the Thames etc. 6000 and 8000 both have the same bodies just the spool size is different, 6000 is actually heavier than 8000. Penn live...

    Budget Cat rod

Howard, I use fox warrior 5.5lb spod rods when i go to France and have had cats to well over 100lbs on them. I use them with penn live liners which are sea reels designed to use with braid. For line i use 100lb berkley braid. The other set up i use in France for carp are jrc 3lb rods about £30...

    Sandy Bottoms!

Matt, Some of the best swims on the Thames can be found opposite warning bouys (for warning boats of shallow water). These areas are usually a very fine sand and slope up towards the bouy. Barbel love to feed on a slope.

Chimera Ultra Flood vs Torrix 2.5lb

Hi Chris, I have a Chimera 12ft S/U it is an unbelievable rod, how the hell Harrisons can make a rod that will cast an 8oz feeder across the Thames and will show a the slightest bite is beyond me! I have been lucky enough to catch a few on it, no problem with hook pulls. I never use less than...
