    That's not a Barbel!

They are a great looking fish - it took a fingernail sized piece of shelf life boilie paste!

    That's not a Barbel!

So would I Jonny! Not had one yet but fortune favours the bold ( or brave if you fancy trying around lower broughton! ) On my usual barbel river, the Ribble, when it's low like it is now and the Salmon hang around in the pools waiting for the next rise in water level to carry on their...

    That's not a Barbel!

Thought i'd share this with you all. We've all made accidental captures whilst Barbel fishing and occasionally those captures turn out to be quite special. I was lucky enough yesterday to make one such capture while fishing on my local river Irwell - that of a truly monstrous Brown Trout...

    Morning or afternoon?

I prefer mornings in the summer and autumn months and evenings in the winter. Love being on the river at dawn which means the alarm is set for 3am at the moment giving enough time for a brew, chuck the gear in the car and get to the river. Back home well before last orders on the McD's...

    Your go to bait

That's my WAEF/go to bait ( WAEF = When All Else Fails! ) 2 8mm's glued back to back - barbel magnets. Totally irresponsible using them as apparently they are very unhealthy and lead to big fat Barbel!

    Unleaded leaders

Some, like Korda's, have an inner core which is then coated much like a fly line so although the outer coating becomes damaged and tatty the leader will retain it's breaking strain. Agreed. None of them are heavy enough on their own to pin down in flowing water.

    Knots

Couldn't agree more! Sometimes called the Trilene knot - built in shock absorption! When tied with mono you can actually see the knot stretch under compression unlike most knots which constrict and ultimately weaken the line. When tied with braid you won't see any stretch but it will never slip...

    Using Paste

A few years ago when fishing the middle Trent regularly Bream were always likely to move in on pellets and fishmeal groundbait, tried big baits but even double 21mm pellets or boilies were taken by the Bream which averaged 6-8lb! When targeting Barbel i would only feed hemp and then fish a...

    2.25 tc rods

Last time i went uptiding in the Mersey i was using 6oz. :) Test curve is not the definitive guide to a good flood rod. I've used 2.25's as my standard barbel rods for the last 5 seasons or so on the big rivers simply because they can do everything i need of them from plopping 1/2oz under the...
