I would have thought that if you have no experience of barbel fishing paying for a guide may be the way forward. I have no axe to grind, but if you are travelling and paying for b&b the little extra for a guide may help. Sorry I can't recommend barbel guides from experience but have used guides...
I've tried all of these methods and gone back to just soaking with no cooking as recommended by Fred Crouch. That is assuming that it's not for use on the hook
the fittings on the original drennan tench float were sliders so could take any size reel seat. Having said that I also have a mk4 which will take a speedia.

As for quality it is only for feed, as long as its fresh it's ok by me. Having said that I use the jumbo for hook bait

There are stretches on the Lea that are much more prolific than Kings Weir/ Fishers Green. Club, Day ticket and free. It involves a lot of foot work to find them
I was match fishing on the fens in the 70's when the zander started making an impact. All zander caught were killed as a matter of course, It made absolutely no impact.
Having said that I have signed the petition on the grounds that any noise made is better than none at all.

I shrink tubed my isotopes on years ago, so long ago that I have had to replace them due to the light failing I don't know what the half life of the contents of Drennan isotopes is but must be a few years. Have had no problems at all
