Centrepins: A Bit More Variety Needed?

The best quality centre pin reel I have ever used / owned was made by a chap called Kenny Kendall ,crafted to amazingly fine tolerances , spins forever and very durable , I would never sell it .I think I paid £50 for ut second hand not that many years a go

    Braid for Barbel fishing.

Its biggest disadvantage is its utterly unreliable breaking strain ,this alone puts me off the stuff . There have been many threads of here regarding the pros and cons of braid , look back in the archives and you will find lots of opinions

    Digital scales

I would avoid digital scales , there have been previous threads on this subject and many have experienced problems with electronic scales , I would go with reubon heaton dial scales or avons , avoid the reubon heaton mk2 flyweights, I bought 2 sets , small and compact they may be , accurate...

    Water/ air temps

So if its minus 6c at night and plus 8c in the day where does that leave you ? I used to take water temps but gave up as at best they are only a vague indicator . For example last night here in york the air temp was + 5c , daytime temp now is +8c ,combined figure of 13c , fill yer boots ...

    Big Cat sightings

Alan , if you regularly see this creature , I would suggest a trip [ pun intended ] to the quack .Also , as far as I am aware, Maddo does not have a pink tail but I stand to be corrected !

    Big Cat sightings

I have always been intrigued by this subject . I know 4 people who have seen big cats in the UK [ all large black panther type creatures ] Two of these people were anglers who saw them at close quarters whilst out Angling , 3 of the 4 sightings were in daylight . I have absolutely no reason to...

Ledgering upstream vs downstream pros and cons?

I rarely fish x2 rods now ,i.e. one upstream and one downstream but in the days when I did I always caught more fish on the downstream rod than the upstream one , no firm answer as to why that was but looking back in my diaries it was virtually always the case

    Vehicle of choice

Just a note with regard to timing chains which are designed to last the life of the car , great selling point BUT this only holds true IF the vehicle has been regularly/ properly serviced , regular oil changes plus all the filters is a must , service history is everything . Also with vehicles...

    Vehicle of choice

Never spent more that 2k on a car so have had all sorts of heaps in the past but most have been reliable and could accommodate fishing gear with the back seats down . I have a van [ Toyota Hiace SWB] ultra reliable but useless for fishing as rear wheel drive and gets stuck on a wet dock leaf ...

Opinions on a starter centrepin and line advice

Go second hand , get a Speedia , you should get a good un for £50 , great little reels , plenty on the market , or perhaps an Okuma Aventa , not strictly a centre pin as they run on a bearing but nice well made reels

Question for the braid users out there

Claimed breaking strain of braid is utterly unreliable , i.e. it usually breaks way under it 's claimed BS , hence people using braid lines with very high breaking strains to compensate as it were . Given this , its poor knot strength ,and woeful resistance to abrasion I see very little point...

    Posting rods

I would be very interested to learn how anyone has posted a rod with Parcelforce / Royal mail with a length greater than 1.5 ms for £13.95 . Did you book online , or take in to the post office ? If you took it direct to the PO and paid there , did they measure it ? I am not wishing to labour...

    Posting rods

Pa Parcelforce may carry parcels of this length but not for £13.95 as was quoted earlier

    Posting rods

basically your local PO are not sticking to their own rules regarding length , I wouldn't enlighten them as you are on to a good thing there !

    Posting rods

UPS are very good . I remember sending a rod to Italy during the pandemic . At the time the Italians put exclusion zones round certain towns / cities and UPS could never get the rod to its destination , they tried and returned it to me x4 times but persisted and it arrived unscathed after months...

    Posting rods

I have posted scores of rodsin UK and all over the world only experiencing the occasional problem BUT , the cost of posting long rods is very expensive [ over 1.5 metres ] . also if you read the very small print , most couriers don't insure rods for damage in transit .I have found UPS and...

    Adcock Stanton Help

Not sure Nick , but I don't think that is a drag knob . Clive Shipman, who I think is a BFW member is the man to ask about all things centre pins , he's on F Book
