I had one of these, its a copy of an old JRC model. The JRC model lasted me 10 + years until a mouse ate through the bottom of it.
Unfortunately the Angling direct version has fallen to bits after about 3 seasons heavy use, the harness literally fell off the bag when I went to put it on. So...
I never knew that I needed one of these:)
@Richard Isaacs Did you have a carbon quiver tip fitted or glass? Im presuming you could have had a choice. I rarely properly quiver tip so can get away with carbon tips as Im holding the rod but if you want to spot delicate little plucks you need a...
If you like using a clutch then speed-drag or quick drag reels are not the way to go in my opinion. They go from locked up to spinning freely far too quick and make the use of drag facility redundant.
So on that basis Id say go for the Daiwa, I like the sound of the larger diameter spools 👍
Do an Ebay search for 'softie jacket' and pair one of these with a Army Goretex overjacket. That is literally the best set up you will get.

Seresto flea collars work amazingly well, much better than any chemical treatment or tablets.
They cost about 30 quid and they last longer than the 6 months it says on the tin.
I live next to a cattle field and the amount of fleas is ridiculous, they were nearly killing my cat! These collars...
I'd stay away from the Tackle Box avon (1:25tc 11ft) it is an awful rod with a horrible flat spot ridden action. The quiver tips section is even worse.
Id try and get an Old John Wilson.
Ray Walton and Fred Crouch were on the tele talking about how the luncheon meat effected the barbel's barbules!
I swear it even led to a reduction in offal products going into the meat.
A couple of koi in my pond have extra barbules and I have caught carp with extra an barbule ON an extra barbule
Obviously the main thing to come from Pauls posts is that gooners are rubbish barbel anglers and Tottenham Hotspur fans are the best barbel anglers 🤪
I always carry a mat, and use one when barbelling but Im guilty of not carrying one when chubbing. The one thing I would say is that I have never...
Its easy to whip a hair onto a hook so as you can fish your mainline straight through. Just do a normal knotless knot and then tie it off round the shank with a few granny knots. There is probably a proper knot but this is what I have done for years.

Very interesting question, there was a thread years ago that meandered down a similar path.
I have often thought we have 2 species of barbel in the UK, like you say there does appear to be 2 distinct types but apparently they just look different and aren’t different sub species.
There is...
There is a seller on ebay, i think its Darrens-Isotopes or DarrensCarpIsotopes who sells different sized ones and different colours.
I find having 2 different colour isotopes helped me alot. I use a green and a white one (dont go for red would be another tip)
Cant see it getting any better once we are no longer bound by the EU Water Framework Directive, its bad enough now.
Its such a shame that people think it is a radical idea for utilities to be in public ownership, when the idea gets banded about its labelled as a commy takeover.
