Good post that Kieth. Unlike you, my father had zero interest in fishing but luckily when I was around 11 years old an old timer, after challenging me for being too noisy, took me under his wing and taught me a basic understanding of 'angling'. Crabtree did the rest until I eventually graduated...
I'd say its the age old problem of miscounting the revolutions of the scales, plus forgetting to deduce the weight of the landing net, and also standing on the fish's tail while weighing it.
Yes and the same applies to live sandeels, live pout, live prawns and fresh crab.... and that is one of the main problems with being a part-time bass angler, unless you have the means of keeping your bait in tanks? Plus when fishing from the beach the mackerel often only come within casting...
Very useful stuff this, George. I am determined to catch a big bass from the beach... but the mindset involved is a huge leap for a freshwater specialist. If only it were as simple as taking a bag of pellets, eh!
First thing is baitdrop a few loads of feed in it and watch the reeds. If they start getting bashed about then you have some big fish feeding in there. Feed the swim properly though and you should soon draw them out.
Thanks for getting back at me on both points, George. Re. the redgills, when I say shallow water, I mean very shallow.... perhaps 6 feet deep at 70 yards out and shallower still closer in.... hence the long casting. The bottom here is mostly large pebbles and stones and my main concern is not so...
George, I've located a supplier of live sandeels and I'm keen to get them a go. I was wondering how hardy they are for casting?... and what are the best rigs for presenting them in very shallow water? Any info you might like to share on this?
I was fishing a spot in Sussex last week that has a reputation for big bass but is very shallow throughout. At one point I thought a shoal of mackerel had come in so cast a flight of mackerel feathers at them in the hope of catching my dinner, only it turned out that they were a shoal of small...
That reminds me, I once watched two pike arguing over who was going to have an eel. They both had different ends of it and spent an hour pulling at it while getting increasingly peed off!
I have a love/hate relationship with cormorants. I hate the way they leave the rivers roachless but I love the way those tench grow big after they have removed all the small fish from a lake!
That reminds me of the motorized coots designed to sneak a pike bait out on certain very private Norfolk Broads.... all very good until a pike decides to eat that motorized coot!
Nice to see you too Steve. Sorry it was all so hectic. Those book collectors are mad. I'm sure I signed over 1000 books today. Now I know why some blokes charge them for singing!
