    Deadbait rods?

That's kind of where my problem lies with rods labelled as deadbait rods: they all seem 3lb tc+. It's bit of a minefield with cheaper carp rods as it's the through action I like coupled with the lighter test curve for smaller waters, most rods with carp written on the blank seem a bit...

    Ray Walton Rolling Pin

I would echo the casting thoughts above. As a relative newbie to 'pins, I considered a rolling pin but figured that, aside from the cost, I'd feel more satisfied with learning to cast ''properly'' and using a traditional type 'pin. The whole casting this does seem a little daunting at first but...

    transport

With a few simple changes you can fit a bed, table, stove and water tank and get it re-registered by the dvla as a campervan. The insurance on my transit dropped from over 700quid to just over 200! There's no reason you couldn't do the same on a smaller van just need to be clever with the...

    Deadbait rods?

Hi all, With the cold weather looming and me being in danger of becoming dangerously obsessed with chasing the big barbel on my local river, I'm going to be needing the odd respite from it. I've been Piking for years but have always used carp rods. Now I'm all grown up and moved out, my Dad has...

    One for the maggot men.

That is indeed me John, only got back into fishing and BFW after a break of a few years....... fishing a really pressured bit of river where I've seen fish turn away from every bait going so maggots seem to hopefully be the answer hence my curiosity.

    Okuma centrepin question

Great info Haydn much appreciated. Not so much appreciation for the Vanessa Feltz image I now have flying around my head haha!

    Which rod rest?

Beautiful Haydn! That's certainly set me up nicely for a day at work where I'll definitley not be thinking about being on the river...... For what it's worth, I think I have an old dinsmores bank stick and one of them swivel V heads for the rod to sit on. This is a bold statement for a modest...

    Okuma centrepin question

    Okuma centrepin question

It has indeed Paul! That's great info much appreciated..... I really fancy one of the Fred Crouch 'pins but it's just a little bit out of my budget sadly.

    Okuma centrepin question

Hi Guys, I'm considering getting one of the Aventa pro 'pins on reading some good reviews, I have one question though before I order one: does anyone know what the ratchet set up is on it? Is it a slide up/down system or does one twist the round lever on the back? Been trying to suss it out...

    One for the maggot men.

That's kind of where my thinking takes me Alex. Though you know us Barbel anglers tend to overthink, over analyse and overcomplicate matters sometimes! Saying that I'm still more confident in feeding 5 pints of whites instead of 5 pints of reds!

    One for the maggot men.

Hi all, Maggot colour. Do you think it matters? Do you think red gives you an edge over whites? Do you catch more or less nuisance fish on bronze? I tend to nearly always get whites, I'm not exactly sure why I just find myself asking for them instead of any others, maybe there's something in...

Problems with Drennan Mini Night Nights

I've often found myself trying to weight up the pros and cons of iso vs starlights...... I tend to lean towards iso as it's always there and like John says they soon pay for themselves. However the one or two times I have lost them it is annoying due to the cost implications. On the subject of...

    Best scales

I much prefer the reliability of dial scales, there's something about digital ones that just doesn't appeal to me although I can't put my finger on it. Out of curiosity does anyone know if local authority weights and measures can check scales for free or if they charge? I'd be interested to...

    head torch

I too tend to avoid night fishing as I've caught very few barbel in the hours of darkness and I never feel comfortable crawling around the bank at night. However for the odd hour or so I do fish into dark I've had one of them little Gardner ball type headtorches for a couple of years now and I...

    Loddon theft - beware

I've heard of similar events happening on a more regular basis now. One of the tricks is to break a car window in the fishery car park or roadside, wait for the angler(s) to head up to investigate and then swipe the unnattended tackle from the bank. Makes my blood boil.

    Long hooklink casting

How deep is the water you fish? If it's shallow enough I tend to wade out and lower baits in with long hooklengths under rafts etc..... creates less disturbance too and you can drop it exactly where you like.
