To be honest though, I was really trying to get a barbel. Reason for trying so hard to catch a barbel is because it's so cold and i'm curious how low a water temperature I can tempt one to take my bait on float gear.

Incase anyone is wondering how capable these reels are, here is an example of what I caught with it when I used it...
You can do exactly the same thing with an ordinary drag, front or rear drag as with the QD. The only difference is it takes more roatation of the drag.
The fighting drag on some of the shimano reels, is imo a much better option than the front quick drag drag.

I think catching barbel in cold temp's is down to a mixture of things.... knowing the water your fishing, how the fish respond to the conditions and what triggers them into feeding because you may only have a short window of opportunity when they do go on the...
