    New barbel rod

Think the new one is 3 piece , would be easier to transport than the two piece older one , only seenit available from e-bay from Germany new with quite a bit of postage, know problem casting heavy weights and feeders, without being a poker tip wise .

Have used the 3 section screw threaded NGT landing net handle nice reach not to heavy and useful when having to going downstream a bit on a large river with a landing net handle that can fold to a short length when required , still like my Middy rock ard handle that is getting a bit worn now .

    Trent MASSIVE bream

9 1/2 lb for me , not many at all this year biggest about 4lb , used to be huggings of them before the barbel barged in , all species have their own merits , although do sometimes get a bit miffed when catching dabs instead of cod in winter.

    Hooks again.

The third option , Micro barbed, like the fox wide gape beaked hooks, I have caught a couple of barbel with tow rope braid hook lengths and jonking great barbed hooks trailing from the mouth, did see a poor trent river carp that looked like a gummy bear mouth wise what a mess a while back.

    Needed warm waterproof boots

Imax boots are quite a wide fit and a generous size, most of my socks have come from a south Yorkshire army surplus store and the seal skin ones are mod issue along another pair of neoprenes that have no name with various others that are wool, when its bloody freezing cod fishing in the deep...

    Barbel baits

Good old Halibut pellet , even last mild winter , still prefer plumrose ham and pork over spam, and lobworms will be in good supply at the moment from most lawns, find out what works for you, without becoming a product placement merchant .

    playing fish without clutch

I have been using backwinding for numerous years, but had a barbel recently that just grabbed and spun the reel so quickly , nearly took my little finger with it when I applied pressure to the handle , suffice to say all my reels clutches are set to give before the line breaks now.

What’s reels do people use on Trent ?

Various rods from 2.5 test curve to 3lb, like the Korum 13ft barbel rod , does not break the bank cost wise, some good second hand reels from Shimano , Daiwa and Okuma amongst others are available if you look around, sizes from 6000 -8000, look for good line capacity, strong bail arms and not...

Anybody heard of Mink carp rod .

Thanks for info will try this , they feel quite a through action without being to wallowy and that sort of checked weave to the carbon plus a neat chunky hookclip suggest a good quality blank , will have to road test week after next on the trent .

Are any small river barbel populations thriving?

Look at rivers like the Hull where after various stocking , the barbel have emigrated in numbers to the more down stream often murky very tidal stretches, where they will be harder to predate and can live in relative peace, where they will breed though I dont know .

    Rods a bit different?

Have landed quite a few with this , not a poker at all , and does not cause the argument for car space when combining fishing , with hols , family life etc . with the other half .

    Scales

Old avons for me, got some old small barrel brass scales for roaming smaller rivers when I don't want to take the kitchen sink with me .

    Rods a bit different?

Shakespeare Equaliser boron pike rod 12ft 3 sections ideal for roaming around , but also good for static fishing on larger rivers , lots of rings, nice foam grip handle does not feel or look like a carp rod .
