Neil, what if a lot of fish are eaten at the waters edge, with the remains then floating off or sinking out of site.

What all ten people Rhys As a cull will never be sanctioned,we just have to except barbel less rivers.

    Teme Study

I merely suggested it's the only solution. I don't expect barbel anglers on mass to take up arms. How many badger carcasses do you encounter at the roadside? Next time stop and have a look, they're not all roadkill. Humans have always sorted 'pests' out, whether it be rats,squirrels,badgers,the...

    Teme Study

That's the problem Derek, very few carcasses are ever found because they're quickly 'cleaned up'. How often have you vacated a swim and then looked back only to see magpies, crows etc land and scavenge. Wildlife quickly cotton on to a easy meal, avian scavengers first then ultimately bigger mammals...

The only solution is a cull I'm afraid. Just don't consult the powers that be or the general public, what they don't know won't hurt them. Angling is an insular pursuit, probably best kept that way.

Sitting it out on a single bait

I agree about the big bait equals big fish theory. On the lower Severn last season I initially tried the big meat, but I found the snotties would whittle it down until eventually it was all gone or pulled off the hook or hair. Large boilies were my next bait, but even then the bream were still...

Sitting it out on a single bait

Neil,I always did best on the Wavon when resting the swim 30-60 mins after each barbel bite. Introduce a small pva bag of free offerings, then just.....WAIT.

Petition for the abolition of the closed season on rivers

The 'popular' stretches of those rivers are about to get an almighty hammering, because of the close season. The law abiding amongst us being on an enforced 'cold turkey' are most probably chomping at the bit. A mass bombardment just after spawning is not good either is it? The close season is...

    Tench 2016 - 2018 and counting ......

Well done Jason, that's a right cracker of a tench, who cares its not doubles,it's near as dammit. They don't get much bigger. When do you think they'll spawn? I was hoping to maybe do a short session in two weeks. Though fear that maybe too late.

    Bivvys on the banks.

Good to meet you too Jason. I'm glad you've managed some tench, maybe the carp have vacated the swim finally. My swim was just 'carp central', I think my baitrunners are now burnt out. Probably over 25 takes in 36 hrs, only managed to get 14/15 of those in,tench gear well under gunned for angry...

    Bivvys on the banks.

What about the chest waders,so you can stand in the margins with a '30' for a trophy shot. Copious amounts of funny smelling 'baccy' is also required. Finished a 48hr tench session yesterday amongst the hordes of long stay carpers, not really my cup of tea,but close season tenching was calling.

    Tench 2016 - 2018 and counting ......

Cracking fish whatever their parentage Joe. Golden tench certainly do go over 3lb,I had one myself of 6lb 3oz,out of the river of all places. Probably an escapee from an ornamental pond.

Petition for the abolition of the closed season on rivers

Whether the close is lifted or not,the most important thing is protecting the spawning beds. They should be treated like an SSSI. What about the paddlers, canoeists, who probably as we speak are ploughing through said areas.

    Lake record

Huge grassy, stunning colours too. Well done Mark. Not everyone's cup of tea but I think they're stunning creatures.

    Tench 2016 - 2018 and counting ......

Good luck Jason, lost my only bite of a day session on oxlease about 3 weeks ago, felt big, slow and heavy. The hook pulled 10 yards out, initially thought a carp, but the end tackle covered in slime....aaarghh!

    What compost

    Lots of good advice,much appreciated.

    What compost

I came across an article in anglers mail 'create your own wormery' written by Archie Braddock. He advises to buy a general purpose garden compost which contains peat, but to make sure it doesn't contain worm inhibitor. So he goes against the advice of most on here.

    What compost

Can anyone recommend a suitable compost for growing dendra's. I did a test sample with some I've had in the shed for a while, with a handful of worms, and they quickly perished. A trip to the garden centre is needed, but I've no idea what type or brand would be suitable.
