    Anybody stopped fishing?

All this 'if you care so much about barbel why fish for them' is just a cop out,to ease the conscience of the people fishing for them in these ridiculous conditions. Barbel aren't an endless commodity, and they're especially fragile compared to most species. They're also, along with carp, very easy...

    Anybody stopped fishing?

Gwyn,I have kept a fishing diary since 2001,and I can assure you this year's conditions are unprecedented. Of course we've had hot summers before, but they've always been broken by spells of adverse weather, not just prolonged dry hot spells, well 2001 until now anyway. You seem to be trying to...

    Anybody stopped fishing?

Isn't that the same joker that tried to claim a bogus river record? Seriously makes me want to throw all my kit in the skip when I read s*** like that. Fishing is truly screwed in this country.

    mortimer & whitehouse gone fishing

Helps massively if you get the daft sort of humour both Paul and especially Bob are famous for. I simply like the overhead views of our stunning English countryside, makes it worth watching. If pure fishing content is your thing then yes it's crap, but then it wouldn't appeal to the none angling...

    Anybody stopped fishing?

Had a walk along the Avon near Stratford yesterday. Had to get out due to boredom at not being able to fish. Happened upon a massive shoal of big bream completely motionless on the surface. Looked like even they were struggling, mind you it's a very sluggish stretch at the best of times. Also...

    Anybody stopped fishing?

At a guess I'd say there's probably more barbel anglers on the Trent than all other rivers put together. It's also frequented by many 'sponsored' anglers who feel the need to always report catches to appease their tackle and bait sponsors. The immense pressure on that waterway will inevitably...

    Big snig

Huge eel caught by design in this week's anglers mail. Well done Dean Aston. One of the hardest targets in angling I think.

    Anybody stopped fishing?

Gwyn,I've fished for barbel a long time now and caught plenty over the years. I've also had the misfortune of having a big fish, well rested in capacious landing net, then go belly up,moments after it powered off. It felt very strong whilst holding the wrist of its tail, and the resulting water...

    Anybody stopped fishing?

The concern is with the fine weather crowd not the experienced all weather river angler. The summer crowd only care about the weather not the fish. If they persevered through the more difficult months they would no doubt have a better understanding in general of fishing.

    Anybody stopped fishing?

I wouldn't personally fish for barbel during this heatwave. Last week for my first session of the season I targeted carp, not only because of low dissolved oxygen levels, but barbs are always a bit vulnerable post spawning. Carp, tench etc seem to be able to tolerate much more 'heavy handed ness' I...

    New baits...

All those baits will catch barbel. It matters not what flavour or 'attractor' is used, the underlying base is the most important aspect. Tony Miles wrote about it in his book 'elite barbel'. In great detail he explained the virtues of a very good quality base mix being most important, and I...

    Teme Study

It doesn't matter, even if it could be proven scientifically, without a shadow of doubt that otters have destroyed adult barbel populations, still nothing would be done. As was mentioned earlier, the ONLY people who care about barbel, are barbel anglers,a tiny proportion of the population If we were...

    Teme Study

On a small waterway, can otters and barbel Coexist at all? With food in abundance won't just a single otter keep killing relentlessly out of instinct, just like a fox in a hen house or a domestic cat.
