Hi Peter,
Wouldn’t say perch (or rigs for that matter!) are my specialist subject, but for what it’s worth here are my thoughts...
Perch obviously don’t like resistance, so a helicopter rig is probably not your best bet? The tension down the mainline may be resulting in dropped bites before...
Looks like a good solution, Mark.
Yes, was thinking about down to 1oz, so fairly light. I used the Drennan connectors and isotopes at the moment and usually attach two as I find it easier to watch then for some reason. But as soon as they’re not needed they’re off again, which is all a bit of a...
Bob (or anyone else who might know), any thoughts on how light a tip section it’s possible to apply an isoblob to? Obviously works very well are relatively strong tips/ top sections, but i’m wondering if it’s even possible on lighter quivertips or would it cause problems?
Haha, well as long as we’re both catching, that’s the main thing! 😂
Different experiences for different anglers on different rivers... no rights or wrongs, just preferences, no doubt. Let’s call it ‘thought provoking debate’ and hope Danny can still try and glean something out of it! 😊
Well firstly, I agree with the vast majority of what you’ve said, but there were just a couple of things that struck me as slightly over-simplified/ generalised (which makes sense in the context).
The idea that chub don’t go looking for food and just wait for it to come to them would be the...
Blimey, quite a bit above that I’m not sure I agree with, although mostly relating to chub rather than barbel. For another thread another time though - don’t want to detract or distract from very good and thoughtful responses to Danny’s question 👍
Yes, reasonably often, although I also fish the Thames and a couple of other rivers down this way too. I used to live in Oxford though, so they still feel like my home waters!
My angling buddy lives up in Oxfordshire, so we often fish the Warkwickshire Avon too.
Great stuff Edward, a 5.09 is a very nice fish indeed! On the windrush again?
Otters can absolutely cause all sorts of problems, but provided there’s enough cover, it’s not necessarily game over. I was fishing on a small Thames tributary a few weeks ago and an otter popped up again 10 yards...
For those interested, PerchFishers have come back to me with a really helpful response (below). They’re going to publish something in their next magazine just to help raise awareness, but hopefully it’s nothing too serious. Thanks all
“Hi Stuart
You’re getting some nice fish there.
It...
Yes, I ended up emailing Andy Horwood who’s their scientific officer, which seemed appropriate. Emailed all the photos I have, so we’ll see what he comes back with.
Hopefully it’s absolutely nothing, but better to err on the side of caution I thought
A big flask of tea, a small bottle of water, a couple of sandwiches made the night before, some sort additional savoury snack (sausage roll or pork pie usually) and a piece of fruit and that’s me set for the day! Usually starving by the time I get back though 😊
I find having plenty of food...
Dropped an initial email to the EA, so we’ll see what they come back with. Did search for a relevant department at Oxford University that might be interested, but drew a blank
Hi Edward,
I actually spent a couple of years living in Faringdon, so I know the upper Thames and it’s tributaries well.
It’s not been an easy autumn/ early winter for me either!! And the Thames can certainly be a cruel mistress. To be honest though, I haven’t fished the Windrush for years -...
I actually live down in Harrow, so travel up to fish the Thames around there. Will happily do some searching online to see if I can find a relevant contact though, as I do have some more photos that I can share and agree that it does seem a little concerning. I’m sure some of the match fishing...
