In praise of the Harrison 11' Avon S/U

Thanks for the advice Andrew, the application sounds fairly easy, probably 10 years of practice might make my hand writing sufficiently legible.

Thanks Andrew, I’ll have look into that, I too have a pen from Guides and blanks and won’t use it again.

In praise of the Harrison 11' Avon S/U

I have quite a few rods that I have for particular circumstances, already got more than I need really, but that won’t stop me because I like building them. I got the GTI for £20 and it was fun to use but tatty, looking forward to trying it when rebuilt. Looks like you hand wrote on the butt of...

In praise of the Harrison 11' Avon S/U

Yes it is a Bob Church rod. It got sidelined when I brought the Harrison Avon, If you have paid that much money you’re going to want to use it! But perhaps the Stef Horak is really the rod I needed and I had it anyway. Perhaps I’ll get it out and try it again. It will work fine since it is only...

In praise of the Harrison 11' Avon S/U

Andrew, Thanks for your opinion on the rod. One day I will treat myself to a new Harrison rod. I have just about settled on an 11 ft 1.75 Torrix, but I have always thought of the Avon SU as a possibility. I have a Stef Horak "Great Ouse" 11ft stepped up rod. It has a lovely action possibly like...

In praise of the Harrison 11' Avon S/U

If you have rods based upon both the Avon and the Avon SU, how do you feel about the performance of each? I have an Avon and I sometimes feel it was the wrong choice, since it feels a bit soft. The SU on paper has only a few ounces greater test curve and I know test curve certainly is not an...

14 foot float rod storage and transport

You can pick up old poles fairly cheaply. Choose the smallest sections you can get away with, glue sections together if necessary. Make up some sort of ends and you have a low diameter carbon fibre storage for your rod. The rod needs cloth protection though since the rings will rub on the inside...

Seems to be a pair on marketplace.

Leeda Blue diamond 13ft specimen float.

I brought a secondhand Leeda XGT Advanced 15ft as my first try at a longer trotting rod. A bit heavy but nice action.

Wanted - Harrison Avon with spliced in quiver

I brought the blanks for a twin tip Avon in Spring 24 so Harrison’s had them then. However I do remember them saying they would look round to see if they had the spliced tip so perhaps they were considering not doing them any more and mine was old stock. If you fancy building yourself don’t be...

Wanted - Harrison Avon with spliced in quiver

The Harrison Avon is particularly nice with the spliced in 3oz quiver. Don’t know why but it just feels better than the plain Avon to me, I have a twin tip. Sorry Rob Francis I don’t want to part with mine, not had them that long. Good luck with finding one.

    River Nene Decimation

Donation Well I don’t live anywhere near there, but I thought P & D AA could do with some support so I donated on their website. It’s not just about the money, which was not a lot, but also about letting them know other anglers care about their situation. If you want to do the same it’s a pain...

    New tip ring

    Sounds a really good tip.

    New tip ring

Recently tried to remove a tip ring, the heat destroyed the fibreglass before the glue melted. I’m guessing this was put on with epoxy since hot melt glue melts at a much lower temperature. The rod is about half inch shorter now. New tip put on with hot melt glue in no time at all.

A ban on lead in fishing?

If I remember correctly the main problem with lead shot was the containers it came in. Many were not single shot dispensers and there were many shot spills in areas where swans deliberately picked up and small stones and swallowed them. The shot was the sort of size swans would choose. They use...

    Hampshire Venues?

Happy to help, I don’t do much still water fishing any longer so it was a bit of a struggle to remember them, I did not mention Broadlands lake and there are other lakes nearby, I think controlled by test valley angling club. I’m also east of Southampton, Warsash, so if you discover a hidden...

    Hampshire Venues?

Difficult to find a large water that is not known for its carp fishing. You may have already researched these. Local angling clubs with waters of about that size are Eastleigh, Portsmouth angling, RN and RM ( Dryad lake) some local clubs have exchange tickets for Dryad I believe. Park gate royal...

Are we losing our Sixth Sense?

I clearly remember casting to a new spot in a swim and being rewarded with a good roach. At the time I was fishing a slack for roach and not getting any. Mr Crabtree taught me to fish slacks in winter, he always did well. However what he did not say was fish don’t have problems with streamy...
