Update 2. Line has arrived and I've let it soak in warm water and spooled up with it. On first impressions it seems really good with little or no memory. I'm happy with it and can't wait to use it in June. One spool will fill my Drennan FD40 spools 3 times!

Update. I've had a conversation with an old pal of mine who reckons that the new version of Berkley XL in 9lb (4.4kg) is amazing. It's 0.22 diameter and extremely supple. I've ordered a spool and will post my reckonings when it arrives.

Thank you all for your recommendations. The club have banned braid so sadly it's a non starter so I'm going to order some Silstar and Reflo power and give them a try.

Lucky lad Josh that's a lovely rod! You're lucky too Richard I wish my lad would come fishing but he's never shown the slightest interest despite years of begging. Tight lines young man.

Will you send the catch report to the weeklies Richard? He'd probably make the front page with a fish like that. You might have to up his pocket money considerably to use his guiding service too!

I'm not suprised Richard I looked at one in a tackle shop and it felt flimsy. I still can't believe the spomb inventors never brought out their own version. They must know about the conversions as it's hardly a secret!

Another vote for Muck Boots but consider looking for them in a builders merchant rather than a tackle shop. Mine were about ten quid cheaper and still green 😁

Gentlemen, I've been following this thread with interest. I have a Drennan Power Float 13footer. I've used it a few times and had loads of chub up to 5lb on it but never a barbel. This is probably due to lack of knowledge/impatience on my part. I intend to put that right this season and when...
It could also be bait choice, location etc, hooklink may not be relevant. A visit to somewhere easier to get your confidence up may be the way forward. A chat with another angler maybe?
It depends on what you think your catchrate should be. Are you struggling while others aren't? The advice on a break and fish elsewhere makes sense. I use Berkley XL Flourocarbon.
