    Vote Tory?

It is a certain type of democracy. The conservatives only got 6% more votes than the Labour party. Ukip, poor devils, have got 1 seat after getting the third highest percentage of the electorates vote. 5 more years of grey faced Osbourne telling us how great the tories are. The turkies have...

    Barbel Catchers.... and Stu Wortley.

The EA already have this evidence with their fishery report data. They have just been able to spin the data positively for so many years. Look how badly the EA reacted when they were made to tighten the criteria and subsequently only 17% of our rivers received good markings. Previously they...

Bolt rigs for tench - minimum weight needed?

If you want to use a lighter lead or feeder fish it running but with a tight line. Thats something that stuck with me from last spring. I went from using 2oz leads and pva bags to a 30gm method feeder. The 2oz lead set up was spot on for bolt rigging, but when I switched to the lighter method...

    Curved shank hooks for Barbel.......

If you like curved shank hooks try Tiemco tmc2457s. They are about a 10th of the price of kordas/foxes etc.

    Line color

I agree that fish spook of the feel of line, especially barbel. Line colour doesnt seem to matter. But, Carp (and I presume other fish too) do have colour vision, it is very much like humans in that it is light sensitive.

    Reasons for Barbel population decline

Most fisheries around these 'ere parts use Skettrings pellets and the 25kg sacks I get from a farmer are skettrings too. When I first started buying bulk pellet 10+ year ago Skettrings did not deal with the public and you had to go through a trade seller. They have specific pellets for the...

    Reasons for Barbel population decline

Who are the companies selling the pellets to the fishing industry? I know of Skettrings as a producer, but not sure if they market products to anglers rather anglers seek there products out. It seems Coppens do actually target anglers so if they are a producer (which I think they are?)...

    Reasons for Barbel population decline

Good work Graham. Any chance you could copy his reply on here? Edit to add Surely where they sell tons and tons of the pellet to the fishing bait industry they must be aware that anglers would be chucking them in rivers and lakes?

    Reasons for Barbel population decline

As above really. I know of a few incidents of the vandalism described by Lol on the Great Ouse. Even areas where pipe reeds take over the stream and thus reducing the flow will have a huge affect on all the barbel habitat of it downstream. Habitat issues could also include dried or silted up...

    Reasons for Barbel population decline

I have copied this from Karen Twines Great Ouse barbel study (its on or around p40 for those who have a copy). -------------------- The presence of barbel in rivers indicates high quality river habitat (Environment Agency 2007b) and although natural fluctuations may account for some of the...

    Otter petition

Why is it that every otter petition is always so poorly written? Surely for something that means so much to so many there is a word-smith capable of something better than what we get served up about once a year? Why don't the bloody PAG do one? (A petition that is). Their website has not been...

    Reasons for Barbel population decline

They are Darren. I used to religiously get the EA fishery reports for the Great Ouse, you just need to find the local fishery guy/gal who will get them together and send them to you, once you get a contact you can pester them all you like! They will probably just confirm the decline you...

    Reasons for Barbel population decline

Very interesting take on things Graham. But I'm not sure that the Barbels diet would have enough of the oestrogenic pellet for it to have an effect? Farmed fish will be 100% reliant on it so the effects would be more significant. It could be a factor though. As I'm sure most will know...

    Method fishing .

have used the principles of method fishing, ie soft mushed pellet* in the feeder or moulded round the lead, compressed to breakdown slowly. I think the Barbel like the softened pellet as it goes straight through 'em. But I haven't used a method feeder approach as short hook-links for barbel...

The big fish off episode two.

Well said Hatter. Anglers expectations eh. Watching someone else fishing is boring even for fisherman. Every fishing program gets slated by anglers. If you are tuning into that program expecting to learn something then god help you:D

    Eddie Price obituary

What.A.Picture. I didnt know who took this picture until reading this thread. It has been an inspiration to me since I first saw it 15+years ago. It still gives me butterflies when I look at it now. RIP Eddie and a very well written Martin.

    angling back on telly!

I suppose the locations help but really everyone wants to see what man-eating-child-snatching-monster Jeremy will land next. It was Anglers Paradise Graham. When I was a nipper Anglers Paradise sounded like.. erm.. paradise. Now Im olderer and wiserer I know it to be an oxymoron. It is nothing...

    angling back on telly!

Is anyone posting in this thread surprised they didnt like it? Anglers are never happy with tv shows that get produced, comparing everthing to 'A Passion' but Im afraid your every day non-angler will find 'A Passion' absolute gobsh??te. I watched it all, and whilst it was a bit lame I found...
