Still a place for a lump of luncheon meat

In my experience, different river Barbel populations respond differently to different baits. Take the Wye for example, if fishing pellet feeder, always include corn in your pellet feeder mix, as on the hook, it can completely outfish pellet hook baits! In comparison corn doesn’t work as well on...

Still a place for a lump of luncheon meat

Most of my larger Barbel come to meat, mostly large chunks inc half tin size. I never fish cube shapes and 100% during general Barbel sessions and especially after dark or in coloured water, it can out fish boillie/pellet approach.

Which off the shelf float rod? Opinions please :)

There are two types of Barbel float rods: 1, Very powerful stepped up float rod where you want to fish 10lb+ line. 2, More general stepped up float rods rated at 6 to 8lb mainline. For me personally this is more of an all round rod, which I’ll typically use to target Chub and which will deal...

    New Drennan 1.5lb Barbel Rods

It would be nice if the 1.5lb TC was an 11ft model

Advice needed for a fixed spool float fishing reel for trotting.

I personally think these make good float reels due to their small compact size: https://johnsonrosstackle.co.uk/shimano-baitrunner-reels/16572-shimano-baitrunner-dl-2500-fb-reel.html I also use them for all of my Chub and Perch tip fishing in the winter. Overall great all round reels 👍🏻 And...

    Cressage

I moderate the PA web forum and bailiff in this area too. You’ll find the PA forum more helpful, due to the general non-publicity rules.

    Cressage

Yes good numbers, desperately needs a flush through and I’ve personally had some very good Barbel by middle Severn weight standards Judging by the lengths you mention, I’m assuming you are a PAAS member? If you go on the club forum, there’s a good annual Severn thread.

    New Drennan Barbel Rods

Re Vertex rods, the main problem is the metallic turquoise bling finish! I actually love the 11ft Vertex Medium Feeder and 11ft Vertex Carp Feeder rods. Both fitted with a 1.5oz glass tip covers the majority of my Chub and Perch tip fishing on small to medium sized rivers. Yes they have the...

Chickpeas and other cheap alternative baits

I recall an article from a number of years back, where an angler stalked Barbel sight fishing using Haribo Starmix! It was more for a laugh and to prove that they’d eat anything. He did catch as I recall 🙂

    Commercial crayfish trapping.

The E.A are reluctant to grant trapping licenses, or at least that used to be their position. The thinking is that the biggest consumer of juv crayfish is adult crayfish. Remove the adults and the population explodes further! I wouldn’t be surprised if some individuals are trapping without...

    Best pellets

I used the last of my Sticky Baits Elip Similar, but I use a small coarse file. You can put two flat sides on a single large elips pellet in seconds. As an aside, I’ve also just found a pot of elliptical shaped elips in the bottom of my freezer, which has made my day 🙂

    Cows

A local dairy farmer told me regarding bulls, its simple, if there’s a bull in a field stay out of the field as even the most placid of bulls can turn on you in an instant! I have no problem with cows, but I do follow the above rule.

    New Normark Rods

During the last couple of weeks I’ve bought both the 13ft Avenger and the 12 - 14ft Avenger. As per my previous post, the 13ft Avenger just blew me away, so the second rod was purchased too. I’m not an angler who is looking to go out trotting for Barbel every week. If I wanted to do this and in...

What is a Kev Baynes Specialist H.T.?

I have some Kev Baynes rods. He did his own specialist range of rods No 1, 2 and 3. These were built on Harrisons blanks and in some cases unique to him, so he claimed. Originally and 20+ years ago, he was also building on Sportex blanks. These Barbel rods were very highly regarded; however he...

    New Normark Rods

Took delivery of a 13ft Avenger mid week, used it on the Upper Severn in Wales yesterday and in a snaggy swim. 7lb line on the pin with 5lb hook length to a size 16 super spade hook. Had 7 quality Chub to just under 5lb. No monsters or Barbel, but the rod just blew me away. As noted in a...

    Cows

As said above, stand your ground. Also make noises and wave your arms around and they should just stop! Putting bulls and cows with calves to one side, I typically find the biggest problem with regular cows, is when you encounter a herd, which isnt used to puplic interaction in the their field...

Combi Rig - loop to loop or albrighton?

In my lure fishing for Perch and Chub, I always join the braid to the fluorocarbon leader with a back to back grinner knot, which has never let me down. Last week and in an attempt to see how strong the knot is, I did six turns on each end connecting 15lb Drennan Gravel Braid to 12lb Gardner...
