Yep, kingfisher colours are basically one big interference pattern. A lot of blues & greens in nature are structural rather than pigments; birds, butterflies, beetles, fish…anything that is iridescent. Years ago I did some work with the NHM. In their stores they have a large tank of old fish...

    Tackle Adaptations Made at Home

An amazing array of droppers in this thread. Reminds me of the barbel book (can’t remember which one) with a guide to make a big dropper from an old tin of tuna 😂

    Tackle Adaptations Made at Home

A quick and easy adaptation: 1. take one Drennan wire avon float 2. pull out wire stem & replace with a swivel 3. dab a bit of clear nail varnish around the swivel 4. voila! You now have a Trent trotter. Enjoy catching fat dace in 6” of streamy water

    Bearing pins. Replacing the bearings.

Hi guys, as a follow up my new Adcock bearings turned up today: Fitted no problem: 1. Does it make a difference? For sure. 2. Is it quieter? It’s different; the old grumbly bearings make a harsh grrrr the new a smooth shhhhhh 3. Is it smoother? Yes a lot! Very noticeable in the hand. 4. Is...

    New Drennan Acolyte

Totally agree. I’ve caught 5lb chub and small barbel 4lb-ish on the ultra when fishing for silvers and it’s not enjoyable.

    Float rods

I’ve got the 12/14ft and it’s OK, good for the price. I bought it as it’s a 3pc 12ft rod and there aren’t many of those around. 2pc 12ft rods are a PITA on public transport. Pros are it’s cheap and will land any big fish. I mean it’s a real beast, you could float fish for Jaws with it. Useful...

How many angels can dance on the head of a centrepin?

    Bearing pins. Replacing the bearings.

A few posts back I mentioned the bearings on my Adcock Stanton reel. As mentioned, the problem is not how long it spins (being a relatively heavy spool it’ll spin for 3 mins) but the earthquake rumble. Getting the bearings out of an AS is more difficult than an aerial type reel it seems. Due to...

    New Drennan float rods

Same. I had to rub down the spigots on my 15ft connoisseur. You’d think that’d be something they picked up in QC. Anyway, it is a lovely rod.

Indeed, one advantage of a “true pin”, smooth as silk.

No idea to be honest. The one I have is a good reel (excepting the lumpy rumble). I’m tempted to buy a beat up one and experiment on that.

A perfect description of my Stanton, lumpy rumble lol. I wonder if material hardness is a factor (although chrome steel & silicon nitride are about the same I think). I guess the tighter tolerance will make the difference.

I’d be interested if anyone has done the same to an Adcock Stanton. Mine runs forever but rumbles like an old locomotive.

It’s a great shot, with or without the “bear” lol

No need to get the bread out then lol.

Thanks for this Richard, a good guide. I’m surprised the bearings come out so easily, I thought they’d be a tighter fit.

    Pin advice

Yeah gotcha, I’ve always had the line coming off the bottom which is why I couldn’t quite figure out doing a wally with line off the top. No rights or wrongs just what you’re used to or feels right.

Yep, it does make sense thanks!

Honest question, how do you Wallis cast with line off the top?
