End of an era or march towards unity?

Powerless? legally speaking with regards to a cull, yes. There is an effective control measure available, not directly, more a by product of a legal practice, eel netting! If every river fishery owner applied and obtained an eel netting licence, Fyke nets placed correctly to trap eels have a...

High or low tips, and why?

Each to his/her own, but I always fish tips down, often with a clip on backlead, just to keep the line out of the way, not only to avoid spooking fish, but can also be real godsend when a fish is hooked and using two rods! peter

    Which to join...Ringwood or Christchurch?

If you join CAC, you could always get a dayticket for Ringwoods better known fisheries,ie, the Royalty, Severals and Throop if the mood takes you! peter

    Rising water temps

Phil,s right, any upward trend, however slight is a positive, location is the key, if you have a hotspot, fish it, not the best time to go hunting unknown areas, but you never know!!!!! I,ve found pellets to be as productive as anything else in these conditions. peter

    River levels

Showing .97m in ringwood, rising again, just like the rest of the rivers, but with a full complment of leaves! peter

Can Man Live by Braid Alone.......

Over many years, I,ve fished for , and caught many different species in all areas of angling, from coarse, sea and game, Ive used all 3 types of line , where suited, and in all this I have only witnessed first hand line damage on a couple of occasions, both involved salmon. They have a tendency...

Can Man Live by Braid Alone.......

The biggest issue withX-line or any fluro is knots, standard grinners just don,t get anything like the best from it, try a Davy knot , considerably better, the only knot that we have tried that gets close to 100% BS, grinners were lucky to get 75% (thats on mono too!!). This has been well tested...

Can Man Live by Braid Alone.......

Having used both extensively, for barbel I much prefer X=line flurocarbon, a decent compromise, limited stretch ,but greater sensitivity than mono, better abrasion resistance than braid, works for me! peter

    pike traces

DIY is the only way to go, simple and quick, whether you choose to crimp or twist, really depends on the wire used, I use 49 strand which has to be crimped but doesn,t kink. As for hooks, cirtcles are the way to go, I,ve used them exclusively for 4 years, my hook up rate is nigh on 100%, the...

Invasive shrimp found in West Midlands

Interesting observation ,Graham, wonder if the EA are aware of that? They should be, would, on the face of it, would be a feasable entry route, far more likely than boat bilges, they may well spread them, but not many would enter the Severn from europe! The fact that the whole river, canal...

    Thames Barbel Feeding times

I had all my best winter catches in the mornings, dawn until lunchtime, evenings were invariably plagued by bream. A lot of significance regarding atmospherics, high pressure, sunny conditions rarely very good, except in big flood conditions, but even then, low, or dropping pressure, cloudy etc...

decolouring new lead weights and feeders

Saltwater does a quick job, make sure you use stainless wires though, brass tends to corrode. peter

    tut tut

At least your saw an EA man, but he was wrong. To fish for salmon & seatrout you need a migratory fish licence, irrespective of whether the fish is taken or not, which is not allowed in England &Wales before June 16th on any river, nor is any form of bait fishing. Many regional variations...

    What waders

Chech out the Snowbee website, look at clearance items, got a pair of zip front chesties(breathables) for £130, half price, the zip is very handy when nature calls when its raining, no having to remove coats etc. Downside is they are felt soled bootfoot, but a set of studs sorts out any...

    rivers around weybridge

The Thames is all free in the Weybridge area, from the weir down stream towards Walton bridge has plenty of likely spots, fairly easy parking, easy walking, watch out for the canoes and rowing boats. peter

    Floodwater Barbel Location

I always use clip on backleads in floodwater, whether fishing up or downstream, they have to be heavy enough to prevent dragging , but they will allow a bait to stay in position for longer periods, especially with lots of weed etc building up on the line.Fishing at an acute (shallow) angle...

    Snowbee salmon gye landing net

The Mclean gets my vote, very good for pike too, would deal with a 30lb fish no problem, I,ve had mine for 3 years, and often have it on my back for 12hours+ a day, very easy to carry and deploy. The only other alternative is the Whitlock net, good , but even more expensive. peter

    Fishing Thermometer

Chuck them, they won,t help you catch fish, quite the opposite in fact, when the thermometer says its too cold, you won,t fish with any confidence, the fish don,t read any books, they don,t do what we think they should be doing in any given set of conditions, they just go about their business...
