How do you like your meat?

I think any strong flavour will work, personal favorite being hot madras, but an addition that really makes a difference, especially in clear waters is to dye the bait, dark brown to black asd well as adding a flavour, has proved devastating in many rivers for me, just another edge. I use food...

    River Thames depths

It varies so much, and changes after big floods etc, I doubt anyone bothers to publish anything. If you are after specific area information, then you might get info from people who fish there, but how many barbel anglers bother to find out the exact depth of their swims???? I have in the past...

    Type of rig you use?

As an added bonus, they are the dogs wotsits for helicopter rigs, just trap between a couple of rubber stops and add a rubber sleeve

    Type of rig you use?

Hi Steve, as Derek has put up a link, you can see what they are, just add a clip, a bead below and a hooklink swivel, they work very well, even if you tie on a link for the lead, I use them for fishing devon minnows and prawns for salmon too. a very versatile, and cheap bit of kit.

    Type of rig you use?

I always use a free running set up, 15lb flouro mainline, 12lb hooklink (both X-line), lead/feeder on a pulley bead (oval bead with integrated swivel), a rubber bead and swivel, hooklink anywhere between 2/4ft, rarely less, hooks from 12 to 8, never found a need for anything bigger, even using...

    Peanuts

Many years ago on this forum, I asked a similar question with regards to tigers for barbel, the responses were not encouraging, but peanuts were given a positive nod by some, worth a try, but do not feed heavily, they are very filling, one fish at a time rather than going for the big hit! At the...

    Early tench

Thankyou, I am still in shock after that fish, it looks like the fish may well have spawned, just what it might have weighed a week or so earlier is mind boggling! I have been too long away from pit fishing, blinkered chasing salmon, but they are fast becoming like rocking horse droppings, so...

    Early tench

I,ve been trying for tench for the first time in many years, , a fish of 8lb 4oz a couple of weeks ago got the ball rolling, yesterday an absolute beast put in an appearance, 11lb 3oz. I am still buzzing!

Very sad, RIP John, an inspiration to so many, someone who had a unique ability to show the joys of angling, across all disciplines.

    Hampshire Avon Salmon

A floating rap will work, watch out for pike, also change the hook arrangement to one treble, look up Tay plug rig, two trebles can cause a lot of damage, a large (no 5) mepps will work too, just need a fish, and they are being very elusive in this big water. peter

    Hampshire Avon Salmon

The rivers rising, way to high for the fly, but spinning is allowed at 1.24mtrs on east mills flume gauge, its probably even too much for that too, but never say never, a big floating devon might give you a chance, you will need a fair amount of lead, at least an ounce, and maybe 2 in places. I...

    Hampshire Avon Salmon

Those Avon salmon are not easy, but the effort and many blanks are all forgotten when you get one, size is in the lap of the gods, but just to land one is a great feeling, just fish heavy, just in case "the one" turns up, no point going undergunned, they are not exactly leader shy! peter

    Otter petition.

I,ve been following this for a while, it makes no sense, removing otters and relocating them where?? Any one with any knowledge of the species will know that the dog otter is a very territorial beast, total opportunist, and a killer of anything that threatens his territory, including his own...

Impact of wels catfish on barbel populations

Cats certainly inhabit the Thames, few get caught, but no real surprise there, they are a top predator, probably munching bream/roach and anything else they fancy(mittens!), who uses proper livebaits for them, now the EA rules limit bait size, the use of cat size tempters, like a 2lb bream etc...

    1st blank of the season

Reckon they will be spawning, or recovering from it, usual stuff, july onwards tends to be more reliable! peter

A fishing chair that isnt really a chair but you can sit on it. And it carries stuff.

To combat the inevitable sloping banks, a pair of bolt-on adjustable legs put on one of these seat boxes with the shoulder straps might well be the answer, seen them somewhere> peter

In reality can Barbel really know the difference ?

They may be high food value, but any edible bait dumped into a stretch en-masse will be taken! Do they know its good for them apparently? no, its just there and easily available, wild creatures are opportunists, free food ,easily found, they ain,t going to pass it up! peter

    Barbel and flurocarbons?

Some years ago 2000-2007 when I fished the Thames with considerable success, fluoro hooklinks & mainline made all the difference, my results compared with many others were noticeably much better and more consistant, OK luck played a part, but my buddy,s were too a man using mono. good enough for...
