    Pike

Andy, your scenario of a small fish picking up a big bait happened on sunday, it never did more than had it clamped across the middle, it was at range on a big herring, the take was very twitchy, and I tightened into it after about 20 seconds, it let go after a few seconds. Neat teeth marks...

    River monsters 7.30 ITV tonight

Sure makes piking look a little tame!!!! What an amazing, and a tad scary looking beast, bet unhooking it was interesting. There,s an hour long version on ITV 4 tommorrow at 8pm. Sure makes a better, more interesting watch than the Geordie **** on 5. peter

    Pike

I generaly wind into a take as normal, IE, after the initial twitchy pickup, fish moves off, then wind into it, same on big baits. I usually freeline baits with 1or2 swan shot or float fish, not tried with big leads, but can,t see why it would necasarily make a difference? Eels, get pestered...

    Pike

I just use one hook, size suited to the bait, for sardine size baits, a 1/0 to 2/0, just lip hooked, they will take a big cast like that, even when defrosted. For "man size" baits like whole herrings etc, a 3/0-4/0 ,but, fished on a braid hair, leaving the hook just above the head. I,ve just lip...

    Pike

Result today, 4 fish, 14lb 5oz, 19lb 12oz, 20lb 11oz, 20lb 12oz, all caught on a single circle hook using sardines and herrings (2 each). This was my first brace of 20,s , I have caught plenty over the years, had loads of big bags of fish, but never banked 2 in a day, well chuffed. Give...

pro`s and cons on x-line 10lb bs any one use

My only issue with X-line is, it is overrated in BS. The 10lb breaks at around 8lb, the 12lb at 10lb and the 15 at 12lb, but if you know those facts, no problem. I use the 15lb as reel line, 12lb for hooklenghts, does aswell as most mono,s, and is far less visible in water, I,am convinced its...

    The eel

Certainly no shortage of them on the chalkstreams this year, plagued by them at times, really annoying, especially when targetting a large salmon, only to have 3 big eels in sucsession ,the third took the bait literally an inch from the salmons nose and its tail wacked the salmon , which did a...

    EA again.

Yep, the good old EA, charged with protecting our fisheries, saw fit to destroy 99% of all bankside cover on most of the lower Thames several years back, the 2007 floods did the rest. Now the fishing is a shadow of its former self, certainly for barbel, and we are funding their folly, oh happy...

    Fairweather angler?

Time for a change maybe, go chase other species, there,s a lot more to fishing than sitting, waiting for that 3ft twitch! Personally, I spend a lot of my time salmon fishing, actively hunting fish, one rod, on your feet all day, working the available water top to bottom, and when you get lucky...

Pike baits – Food for thought!

I was lucky enough for a period of 5-6 years to have unrestricted accsess to a couple of pits run by a trout farm. Along with the fishing, we had an unlimited supply of bait on tap, mainly trout of all sizes, but also roach, netted by the farm, destined for billingsgate!, We tried every size of...

Pike baits – Food for thought!

If you look on the EA national bylaw section, the law on live fish for bait states that you can take upto 15 fish upto 20cm in length, this does not include zander though, so no worries there, give them a go, try a small lure for catching them, or a small livebait, they might well be a tad more...

Pike baits – Food for thought!

MMMMM? Over many years, on many different types of waters, I,ve used all types and sizes of both live and deadbaits.with some mixed results. Big baits, whether live, or dead generally proved more troublesome, and much less productive than what I would call "decent " sized baits(6-8oz). Hooking...

    Bream and barbel?

Interesting, from my expereince on the Thames, I,ve had loads of mixed bream/barbel catches, but I can,t recall ever catching barbel after catching bream first! On many occasions I,ve caught barbel(s) followed by bream then more barbel. When I start getting bream, I now move swim, or fish to...

    Crushed Hemp

No need to cook first, run it through a liquidizer, and just cover in boiling water, leave for 5 minutes, perfect.

    lure/spinning for salmon

Try both upstream and across and down , try and keep the lure as close to the bottom and as slow as possible, (just enough to get the lure working). Cover every inch of likely pools, don,t be in a rush, take your time, braid helps show the sometimes very delicate little bumps and nudges, if in...

    Poich

Nice fish guys, fancy some of that, a winter of diversity coming up, got some big pike to have a go at, decent perch not very far away, and barbel when the mood and weather are right! peter

    Heron problem

They are very persistant, cleaned out 14 golden orfe in 2 days, despite people being at home all day on both days. Tried a few things, the most effective, a heavy mono fence, set on the edge about 18inches high, but you have to keep changing things, the herons soon work out how to get round...
