New to the forum and my first "proper" barbel

What is amazing is that back in the 80/90s i used to teach about the Goyt as an example of a heavily polluted river...you would not believe the change and what is possible.

    gti barbel rod

James i have a GTI 12' at 1.5 and 1.75 TC built by Roger on the Harrison blanks - mainly use the 1.5 for the small rivers (by which i max 4 rod lengths) with 10lb bs line - it is a joy and had a 12 this week with it - lots of reserve power but also sensitive. Casting 2oz no problem but then i...

    Britain's biggest barbel...

Mark I am not one who wishes to get rid of otters per se as my other passion, is there room for two, is wildlife photography but, it is like any species, there has to be a balance. I also take on board that the barbel are probably not at there natural size at present for a whole host of...

    Britain's biggest barbel...

Mark I absolutely agree i just hope the various societies and the Angling Trust read this and take it on board - it is clear we are not partners.

    Float fishing for barbel

Graham I had a Graham Phillips barbel trotting rod from the early 90's that I used on the upper Medway in the days when it held the record ... It would bend almost double, sadly knicked along with all my gear...but it matched my centre pin beautifully. Have never really found a replacement...

    Float fishing for barbel

Appreciate all the comments and Paul I did read Chris's the article but thought two quotes were enough :). Yesterday i was on a stick with 6 No 4 then in more turbulent water used an Avon with 8 no 4...swims were 4-5 feet deep and i tried various depths - both swims had overhanging trees on...

    Float fishing for barbel

Guys Having just started to fish the Kennet , i have decided to have a serious focus on float fishing with the expectation, or should i say hope, of barbel. Two approaches follow taken from links on the site Keith Speer (2010) ... main line on my Centre pin is 0.17 (6.7lb BS), the rod...

Keep a look out for this van

Putting the legality to one side for a moment, I think if the general population saw this they would understand i.e. he has caught fish to eat, they get far less the idea of catching something alive and then letting it go...it is the perennial problem we face as pleasure anglers. I had carp in...

    94lb cat from Severn?

Lawrence on the day i lost whatever there were salmon jumping all over the place and i did wonder was it a big salmon but, as you say, a 1.5tc/12lb line had no impact on it and it moved not as a salmon would. if it was a carp it would have been huge or so i imagine to just keep going as it did...

    94lb cat from Severn?

Neil - great capture ... i hooked something a few years back up near Holt that took about 100 yards of line as it went upstream - always thought it was a cat, fortunately for the fish the braid hooklength went first. There was a bit of me that did not want to land it as steep bank, net not big...

Impact of wels catfish on barbel populations

I hooked something a few years ago on the Severn above Worcester which took 100 yards of 12 lb line charging upstream which i could just not stop... never saw it but speaking to the bailiff he spoke of a big 'cat' in the stretch. On the same day there were also salmon leaping, would like to have...

Stuart they do and some big fish but it ain't easy...we'll i do not find it easy and usually do not bother until September due to boats....have a look at last year's Thames thread....I can fill you in about the Thame being usually the only person who writes on the thread.

Need fishing club in Oxfordshire area

Stuart Lots of clubs on the Thames - Reading has a stretch in Wallingford and then the Kennet when 'Old Father' drives you mad. Obviously a lot of choice in Oxford as well. The tribs are really hard and generally devoid of fish.
